One piece of advice I would give to other early childhood educators is to truly know the children in your care. Developmentally Appropriate Practice starts with understanding each child’s age, stage, culture, interests, and individual needs. When you know your children well, it becomes much easier to plan activities, set up the environment, and choose teaching strategies that meet them where they are.I would also encourage educators to create a warm, consistent, and predictable classroom. Children learn best when they feel safe and valued. Simple routines, positive relationships, and a caring community really support DAP. And finally, stay flexible—watch how children respond, follow their lead, and be willing to adjust your plans. DAP isn’t about doing things “perfectly”; it’s about being responsive, intentional, and always putting children’s development first.
