Make sure it flows from high energy to low energy, loud to quiet. Minimize transitions and make the transitions you do have more structured.

I’m SUPER picky about my environment. I think durable, clean, high quality materials enhance play! One thing about environment that I pay a lot of attention to is lights. So many classrooms have bright, stark fluorescent lights that overstimulate kids. I always get light covers, use lamps if I can, and try my best to use calm, diffused lighting.

  • I always start with the child’s strengths, so the parents know that I see their whole child. It usually helps put them at ease. Then I will move on to potential developmental issues, staying objective and validating any emotions that the parents may have.

  • Observing and documenting a child’s development helps us in creating developmentally appropriate and challenging activities. We can also know their strengths and what they may need to practice more of so we can scaffold. Documenting can also be very important for conferencing with parents, especially if you have concerns about a child’s development.
