Tailor activities to each child’s stage of development and interests, be excited about the learning you want them to do, be interested in their learning, offer suggestions like questions, offer help by saying stuff like “can I show you something cool?” and accept when they don’t need help and want to/need to explore how to find a solution independently.

I like having a very set schedule of locations we go to everyday, with meal and rest times being very regular, so the kids know that they will get a break, and know the general structure of the day. Of course, variety in any planned activities and craft supplies you have is important, so they can try new things and gain new skills.

I think having developmentally appropriate books as well as some about 2 levels above and below the expected level of the age group available is especially important to an early learning center.

Make sure you have the evidence you have collected from observations on hand, so you can point out specific instances that worried you. I think it’s a good practice to not use screens at a childcare center, so the parents can have more control over their child’s screentime.

Caregivers create a serve and return environment in their classrooms by making children feel safe expressing their needs and responding quickly to cues. When children’s needs are met quickly, they trust the caregivers more and often behave “better”

Explain to the parent the significants of 20 minutes to daycare providers and to the child. It can be scary to be the only one left in daycare! Talk to the parent about extra supports for late care, and if they need to add anybody to their pickup list.

The WACs make sure to take into account equity and community impact, and make sure to emphasize cultural humility.

I wasn’t surprised by any of the WACs, but I’m glad I looked over them. They all seem like things that make sense but I might forget or not think about had I not carefully studied them, like postings or saving records.
