Making sure to involve the families in any activities they are comfortable with participating in. Asking questions about the family and what they are looking for in this school year. Learning words and phrases of praise for both the child and the parents. Always showing them the information that they are being given broken down in simplicity to help with the language barrier but still utilizing what skills I can to be informative and involved. Encouraging them to volunteer in the classroom and encourage families to share parts of their culture with the classroom.

Doing a thorough wipe down of surfaces before the beginning of the day and making sure the children are following handwashing procedures and helping prevent germ spread by using the tissue available and washing hands right afterwards. I taught the children in my care to sneeze and cough in their arms and still wash afterwards. The other children would hold each other accountable by reminding each other to wash hands after any of those actions. So, setting up the classroom to prevent the illness rather than be reactive.

With lice, parents should be advised to treat their child’s hair with a product designed to kill lice. In order to prevent spread, schools should be advised to avoid sharing, maintain hygienic practices and conduct regular checks.

Creating a welcoming classroom culture: Making each of the children in my care feel safe, respected, and valued by acknowledging their diverse backgrounds and identities. Its the perfect way to practice preventative discipline and build a positive classroom culture where students are engaged, focused, and friendly.
