I try to communicate to the other teachers in the classroom that I am struggling with compassion in that moment. Overall, I try to find outlets for filling up my bucket. Spending social time with friends and family, playing sports, and camping with my dog and partner. Ultimately having the proper amount of work life balance has helped me with compassion fatigue.

We like to sing a song that counts to 20 when we wash our hands. I think it was popularized by a commercial during the pandemic, “We are Wash-your-hands-ington” clap clap clap

I would highlight how every staff member has a walkie talkie to keep in constant contact. anytime we go anywhere with the kids we buzz into the same channel how many kids and teachers we have in the transitioning group.

  • When getting kids excited for an activity, I usually start by asking them a question about how something works and have a discussion to garner interest. Then many of these activities are usually messy, sensory focused, use a brand-new small motor technique. When I start these activities, I try to have a lot of energy since I’ve found they match my enthusiasm when I do.

  • Think about what you will say before you say it and put yourself in their shoes about how your words might come across. It is important to explain the necessity of developmental screening for the student’s well-being. Make a script, have your key points, where there might be red flags and where you see mastering skills. Ask about home life and if they have noticed anything or if they have any questions. The kids are all learning, maintain honest communication about how the child’s development is going.

  • When they are feeling safe it is much easier to see how they are developing. When I’m creating a schedule, I like to pay attention to the natural ebbs and flows of the classes group dynamic, what their interests are together and individually, and how much teacher-led and child exploration time is necessary.
