Always keep your emotions in check. Make sure you do not leak negative emotions in either your tone, facial expressions or body language when interacting with children.

Be observant and interact with the children in your classroom on their level, following their lead. By using serve and return, you can show you care about their interests and you value their input. Be positive and creative. Make sure the children in your classroom feel seen in your materials and activities.

1. **Be Present and Attentive:** Show genuine interest in their activities and feelings. Listen actively and respond to their needs and expressions.
2. **Establish Consistent Routines:** Children thrive on predictability, so having regular routines helps them feel secure and understood.
3. **Use Positive Reinforcement:** Acknowledge and praise their efforts and achievements, which builds confidence and trust.
4. **Get to Know Their Interests:** Incorporate their likes and hobbies into activities to make learning more engaging and personal.
5. **Be Respectful and Empathetic:** Understand and respect their individual differences, and show empathy towards their emotions and experiences.
6. **Provide Choices:** Allow children to make choices in their activities to empower them and show respect for their autonomy.
Building strong connections helps create a supportive and nurturing environment, which enhances their overall development and well-being.

-ensure a warm welcome upon arrival to both the family and the child in your care
-set up an environment that is welcoming and developmentally appropriate for the children to keep the children feeling comfortable and busy
-a hug or pat on the childs back might be just what the child is needing that moment or day
-give children the opportunity to make decisions for themselves
-redirect children in a positive way rather than in a harsh or firm manner.

MemberAugust 5, 2024 at 2:52 pmBe aware of and prepared to respond to a child’s reach (or serve). This builds trust that you value their insight and they are smart, worthy, etc. of your attention. Participating in active supervision is also important— get in and connect with the kiddos through play or an activity instead of watching from the sidelines.
