I have found that utilizing deep breathing can work wonders to quickly calm someone down from a high stress place. Physical activity, such as running or working out outside of work can also be helpful to de-stress.

Working with children can indeed be rewarding but also emotionally challenging at times. It’s essential for early learning providers to have techniques to manage and release stress effectively. Here are some strategies that can help:

    1. Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to calm your nervous system. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat several times.

    2. Mindfulness and Meditation: Incorporate mindfulness or meditation into your daily routine. These practices can help you stay present and reduce stress.

    3. Physical Activity: Engage in regular physical activity. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Even a short walk during a break can make a difference.

    4. Healthy Eating: Maintain a balanced diet with nutritious foods. Proper nutrition can have a positive impact on your mood and energy levels.

    5. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. It’s important to have time for self-care and relaxation outside of work.

    6. Seek Support: Connect with colleagues or a support network of fellow early learning providers. Sharing experiences and challenges can be comforting.

    7. Reflect and Journal: Reflect on your experiences and feelings by keeping a journal. Writing can help you process emotions and gain insights.

    8. Yoga: Consider practicing yoga, which combines physical postures with mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

    9. Time Management: Efficiently manage your time to reduce stress from feeling overwhelmed by tasks. Prioritize your to-do list and break tasks into manageable steps.

    10. Stay Organized: Keep your workspace and materials organized. A clutter-free environment can reduce stress and increase productivity.

    11. Self-Compassion: Practice self-compassion by being kind and understanding toward yourself. Recognize that it’s okay to have challenging moments.

    12. Professional Development: Continue your professional development to enhance your skills and knowledge. Feeling competent can reduce stress.

    13. Hobbies and Interests: Pursue hobbies and interests outside of work. Engaging in activities you enjoy can be a great stress reliever.

    14. Relaxation Techniques: Explore relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, visualization, or aromatherapy to unwind.

    15. Social Support: Spend time with friends and family who provide emotional support and understanding.

    16. Counseling: Consider seeking counseling or therapy if you find that work-related stress is affecting your mental health significantly.

    17. Time Off: Take regular time off to recharge and prevent burnout. Vacation and breaks are essential for long-term well-being.

If i am feeling stressed in the classroom, i will ask for a minute or two away from the environment to take deep breath and calm down my thoughts. During weekend, i enjoy doing art and gardening to release my stress.

What works best for me is to be in the moment. I’m focused, not worrying about what else is going on in my life. I also exercise daily and enjoy a healthy diet, and that affects how I feel about everything.

I have found that my best reliever to stress is to keep my work life and personal life separate. When I get home at the end of the day I tell my wife about my day and the funny things the kids did that day but that’s it. Or maybe I vent for a little bit but I don’t go on and on in excess. I keep the negative or difficult parts of my job out of my home so that I can leave that stress behind and allow it to fall away naturally.
