Working with children can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be emotionally demanding. One technique I’ve found helpful for releasing stress is taking intentional pauses throughout the day. Even a few deep breaths between activities or during transitions can help reset my energy and emotions. Reflecting at the end of the day is also important. Journaling, talking with a trusted coworker, or simply taking a moment to acknowledge what went well helps release built-up emotions and prevents stress from carrying over into personal time. Practicing self-care outside of work makes a big difference too. Activities like walking, stretching, listening to music, or spending time with family and friends help restore balance. Setting healthy boundaries such as mentally “clocking out” when the workday ends also supports emotional well-being.

Breathing exercises are very helpful to me, as are other skills I learned during Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)- for example, there is a sheet from my therapy program that I made many copies of and fill out to help me see situations clearly and release stress. Reminding myself that worrying isn’t actually going to help me figure something out is especially important.

Something that has been helpful in relieving stress for the short time I’ve been in childcare is simply taking deep breaths and grounding myself/remembering where I’m at and why I’m there. That often brings me to peace.

Working with children can sometimes be very stressful. So, knowing some simple tension release makes all the difference: taking short breathing breaks, stretching, or going outside. Talking to a coworker for support, keeping active, or engaging in something relaxing after work, like listening to music or taking a walk, also helps. Perhaps most important is being sensitive to oneself by knowing that what is done does matter. This decreases stress and could reduce the high risks of burnout.

Working with children is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. One of the most helpful things I’ve learned is that managing my own stress is essential to showing up calmly and compassionately for children. Some techniques that help me release stress include pausing to take a few deep breaths, especially during challenging moments. Stepping outside for a short walk or changing my environment, even briefly, helps reset my energy. Talking with a trusted family member, friend, or colleague also helps me process emotions and gain perspective.I’ve found grounding techniques to be especially useful – like noticing what I can see, hear, or touch when I start feeling overwhelmed. Making time for things that bring me joy, such as spending time with people I care about, being in nature, or quiet reflection, also helps me recharge. Most importantly, reminding myself that children’s behavior is communication helps me respond with empathy rather than frustration. When I take care of my own well-being, I’m better able to stay patient, present, and supportive in my work with children.
