    1. I learned what the WACs actually were and each of their purposes in creating a safer learning space which promotes the development of young adolescents.

    2. I was really surprised by the physical constraints and that it would be allowed in any case. I now see the importance of it and how it can help keep teachers and other students from harm.

    3. With the WACs in mind, teachers can insure they are following regulations and laws to create a sfae space for kids. Day to day if we can keep these in mind than it allows children the freedom to learn and grow while also knowing they are safe and taken care of.

    1. I found out that there are a lot of rules to follow to meet the standards in Washington State. Honestly, I was surprised by how many there are—way more than I thought!

    2. WAC 110-300-0335 (1) says that physical restraint can only be used if a child’s safety or the safety of others is at risk. I wasn’t shocked by this, but I didn’t know that it was actually allowed. It’s good to know that restraining a child is okay if it means keeping everyone safe, as long as the right procedures are followed.

    3. I can totally see how these WACs will influence my everyday work with kids. They set clear steps to follow, which helps keep everyone safe and healthy while creating a positive learning environment. It’s nice to know there’s such a good structure in place!

While working on the WACs activity, I learned that they provide regulations concerning a wide-based area for the care of children’s health, safety, and well-being within an early learning environment. The intensity and specificity of such codes reflect how highly important it is to implement structured rules in providing quality care and education. I was very surprised by some of the requirements regarding specific details, such as the child-to-staff ratio and training of the various members of the staff. A level of meticulousness such as this allows for a strengthening of the concept that even minute details about day-to-day operations are controlled to ensure the welfare of children.

My day-to-day practice in the care of children will no doubt be influenced by coming to understand the WACs. They set a foundation for decision-making and provide best practice guidelines that support the developmentally appropriate, safe, and nurturing environment. For example, they will help me to know the particular training requirements that encourage me to seek professional development based on the set standard. Furthermore, knowledge of health and safety regulations will ensure that my daily routine, from food preparation to maintaining clean and safe areas of play, is well-guided. All in all, the WACs give me an extremely good foundation to work not only within the compliance parameters but also to add further quality to the care I will provide for children and their families.

I was surprised to see how many bases were covered and definitely realized there are far more WAC’s than I had originally thought. It covers all the ins and outs of childcare and gives helpful information in any possible situation.

      2. The WAC that stuck out to me was the child restraint as well. I figured it would go without saying that no ties, bonds or any form or restraints can be used when physically restraining a child but it makes sense that every single possibility would be covered to be safe rather than sorry.

      3. I believe that all of these will definitely have a huge influence on the way us as caregivers will care for our children on a daily basis. They are very clear boundaries that make it easy to stay within when presented with a tough situation.

    1. What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? I discovered that the WACs is a very thoroughly written set of rules that has mapped out almost every situation for providers to use and that it is an excellent reference page to refer to when you have questions.
    2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs? I was surprised by some of the WACs, one being the sleep requirements, or more specifically the reasoning for them. I was aware that the children needed a certain amount of time to rest if they are in your care for more than six hours, but I was unaware that without proper sleep care, children are more likely to suffer from obesity and other health issues.
    3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? The WACs will influence my day-to-day care for the children because it has deepened my understanding of why these guidelines are in place, and it is backed up by developmental science, making me more confident in providing care for the children,

    1. I originally believed that the WACs were only really important to know if you run a center/program. I realize now that it is also important for employees to know the regulations in order to maintain a safe environment for the kids.

    2. I was surprised to learn that centers need to notify the state if they are closing for more than 30 days. I figured they would only need to notify families.

    3. I feel like I can see how the WACs impact my day-to-day practice in caring for children. For example, the WACs tell employees how to be professional and what is expected of them.

I discovered that the WACs provide a thorough framework that governs various aspects of childcare, from safety standards to staff qualifications and curriculum requirements. This structured approach helps ensure a consistent quality of care across licensed facilities.

I was surprised by the level of detail in some of the WACs, particularly those related to health and safety protocols. For example, specific guidelines around ratios and safety practices were more comprehensive than I expected.

I didn’t realize how many aspects of daily operations were directly influenced by licensing requirements, including staff training and emergency preparedness.

Engaging with the WACs has truly opened my eyes to the regulatory landscape in childcare. It’s highlighted just how crucial these standards are for ensuring positive outcomes for the children I care for. I feel more empowered and motivated to implement these practices in my own setting, knowing that they will help create a safer, more nurturing environment for the kids. This experience has strengthened my commitment to providing the best care possible and supporting each child’s growth and development.

I learned that there are several requirements that need to be followed to comply with Washington State standards. It was the first time I read about it.

Physical restraint should only be used if the child

the safety or security of others is threatened…WAC 110-300-0335 (1)

This WAC surprised me, because I didn’t know this was allowed.

I can see how these WACs influence everyday life, in different situations. Support everyone to stay safe, healthy and learning in a positive environment.
