The exercise of sorting statements based on our agreement levels and identifying the factors influencing our points of view was a thought-provoking and self-reflective activity. It highlighted the diversity of perspectives that can exist within a group and emphasized the importance of understanding the various factors that shape our beliefs. It also underlined the potential for constructive dialogue and learning when individuals with differing viewpoints engage in open and respectful conversations. Sharing this activity on our community forum could spark insightful discussions and encourage participants to consider the influence of their backgrounds and experiences on their perspectives, ultimately promoting a deeper understanding of one another’s viewpoints and fostering empathy and growth.

Read the eight statements below that address a variety of topics. After each word is read, add that statement to the paper that best expresses how you feel about the statement.

    STATEMENTS

    1. A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school. –strongly agree
    2. Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities.-strongly disagree
    3. All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs. -agree, but I also think it depends on the center’s ability. I understand that the classroom is designed for all children. However, recently we have had one child with autism and it is really difficult to accommodate him. He needs a one-on-one aid, but we don’t have it. Teachers rotate and watch him, but just separate from his mom is hard on us…
    4. Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. -disagree, all families should have a say, but probably will depend on who is the legal guardian and who lives with the child, open communication is the key.
    5. My curriculum should be based on each child’s current interests. -agree
    6. Diversity includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. -disagree
    7. Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. -disagree
    8. The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. -agree

    MY POINT OF VIEW

    -Divorced parents

    -Parents of different incomes

    -Queer family members

    -Jewish

    -Family all over the country

    -Only speak English

I think it’s really hard for people to change their point of view. You have to really connect on a human level and find the commonality. We all have something in common, but sometimes it feels very distant.

    Strongly Agree

    – A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school

    – All learning programs should accommodate <em style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color); background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color);”>all children with special needs.

    Agree

Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. (In considering social media and even some news sources or documentaries, I’m tempted to move this statement to strongly disagree; however, I believe that there are books or alternative resources that fairly and accurately portray country-wide and global events. Resources should be found and consumed with discretion.)

The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations.

    Disagree

    – Families should <em style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>not be expected to be involved in classroom activities.

Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should <em style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>not have a voice in raising or educating the child.

My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests.

    Strongly Disagree

    – Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but <em style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up.

    POINT OF VIEW

I acknowledge that my point of view is the creation of my culture and experiences. My household consisted of my mother, father, brother, and sister; I’m the oldest of the children. I was raised in a primarily Christian region, and while we celebrated Christian holidays, my family did not adhere to religious practices, like nightly prayers or attending church services. I now consider myself spiritual rather than religious, drawing upon Eastern traditions and practices. My father suffers from chronic pain resulting from a severe injury in his youth. He was a disabled veteran, who worked nights throughout my childhood. While I believe my father to be highly intelligent, he dropped out of high-school, received his GED and did not attend any secondary education program. My mother returned to school when I was young, earned an associates degree and became a registered nurse. My parents divorced when I was in high school. I went on to earn a B.A. in Psychology, as well as a M.S. in Animal Behavior and a M.S. in Fishery Sciences. As a behaviorist, I’ve worked alongside monkeys, crayfish, and snails, as well as juvenile offenders, children on the autism spectrum, and children with traumatic histories. I deeply value community, and when in community, strive to feel and reciprocate feeling accepted, welcomed, held, and remembered. Many thanks for reading.

I believe this world is full of people responding harshly or defensively towards others with views differing from their own. However, I also believe that there are many, many individuals working to hear, understand, and accept our differences. I believe that our views are influenced by our community, education, and lived experiences, among other factors, and that our views can and should change.

Reflect on the ways people respond to one another when points of view differ. Do we ever change our views? What kinds of things influence us to change our perspective?

Sometimes when points of view differ there are negative exchanges, because it is easy for people to feel defensive and protective of their perspective. I think that there are also instances where two people can express their opinions which may be different, however they are open to hearing another side and welcome variety of perspective. There are some cases that I believe are non-negotiable, when someone is insinuating violence or bigotry, however when we teach each other about differences in culture and can celebrate that I think it is effective.

Personal experiences and open-minded conversations can influence a change in perspective.
