POINT OF VIEW
1. The following influence my thinking; community, family, religious beliefs, media, education and peers.
2. The ways people respond to one another when points of view differ; Listen, accepting, and no judgement. Do we ever change our views; often times other influences changes our views. The kinds of things influence us to change our perspective is by interacting and implementing a multicultural activities in the early learning environment.
-
Dianna, your strong agreement on multicultural education and inclusion of children with special needs shows a deep understanding of the importance of diversity in early learning environments. Well articulated!

Point of View: What Shaped Your Responses Above
I think growing up with two moms, in a different household than most others, I grew up being very accepting and open to other people’s differences.

Reflection on Different Points of View
Sometimes when people have different points of view, they may not communicate well; they may be cold, distant, judgmental, or non-inclusive. Yes, I think we can change our views when we open ourselves up and become receptive to other people and their backgrounds, cultures, and lives. By learning more about others, we can become more accepting. Factors that can influence us to change our perspective include our families, school, friends, work, and community. Anything and anywhere can help us change our perspective if we maintain an open mind.

MemberSeptember 13, 2024 at 4:58 am1. We could potentially welcome a child, who has immigrated, into our classroom by saying hello to them in their native language and or including their language into song and circle time.
2. We could celebrate the unique cultures of our children by dedicating time to talking about their cultures and asking them about the things they like about their cultures.
3. We might ask the other children to introduce themselves to this new student in the new students language or by doing it with the whole class.
-
Rawlings, your ideas for welcoming and including immigrant children in the classroom are thoughtful and inclusive. Incorporating their language and culture can create a warm and supportive environment.
-

For this one, I decided to just do my own family as that’s what I’m the most familiar with.
I think that something that would have helped little me embrace my culture would be more discussions about it. Maybe something as simple as implementing stories about my country, using something as a food activity and maybe even a culture night to foster connection with other cultures. I think the first step to celebration is acknowledgement.
-
Maria, your idea of incorporating stories, food activities, and culture nights to embrace your culture is wonderful. It’s important to foster connection with other cultures. Keep exploring!

- A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school. Strongly agree — this allows children to foster a sense of connection and be aware of the different types of people that are around them.
- Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. Agree — Although this can be good for children, differently families might have practices that prevent them from being fully involved. It’s good to be involved and such, however, this should be optional. If it’s mandatory, it won’t actually be willing.
- All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs. Agree — To the best of a center’s ability, I think it is important to cater to children with special needs. If a family lacks certain resources, it’s important to attempt to reach out and provide some sort of help.
- Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. Disagree — I think this depends on a family dynamic. If the extended family member (aunt, uncles, cousins, etc) have always been involved in raising the child, there’s no reason to tear that away from the child. Their extended family might have insight that the parents might not consider and they can be a part of their support system.
- My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. Agree — I think that as teachers, our curriculum should be flexible and accomodating to our children. Some children might like something but might not have the resources at home.
- Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. Disagree — I think this includes all of that. Diversity includes the variety of ages, our capabilities, and the adults that are in our children’s lives.
- Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. Disagree — Not everything is portrayed fairly or accurately in our media.
- The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. Disagree — That’s not really encouraging diversity. At all.
POINT OF VIEW
– Being an immigrant, I think that being able to openly express your cultural identity is a big part of who you are as a person. Assimilation is important but to be able to hold onto your cultural identity and values are important too.

MemberSeptember 25, 2024 at 12:07 amTo include children from different cultures and backgrounds in your preschool, start by creating an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity. This can be done by incorporating culturally relevant materials such as books, toys, music, and artwork that reflect a variety of traditions and backgrounds. Provide opportunities for children to share aspects of their own cultures through activities like storytelling, cooking, or show-and-tell. Teaching children about diversity and fostering respect through discussions, inclusive games, and multicultural celebrations helps build a sense of belonging and appreciation for differences.
Additionally, establish open communication with families to understand their cultural values, traditions, and preferences. This ensures that your curriculum and classroom practices are respectful and reflective of each child’s background. Encourage families to participate in classroom activities, such as reading stories from their culture or contributing ideas for holiday celebrations. By creating a classroom community that values and incorporates different cultural perspectives, you help children feel accepted and respected, which enhances their social and emotional development.

Jennifer’s insights on creating an inclusive preschool environment through culturally relevant materials and open communication with families are valuable for fostering respect and appreciation for diversity. Well articulated!

POINT OF VIEW:
Family, location, education, upbringing, social media, peers
When people encounter differing points of view, responses can range from open dialogue and curiosity to defensiveness or conflict. Yes, we can change our views, often influenced by factors such as new information, personal experiences, empathy, and constructive conversations. Social interactions, education, and exposure to diverse perspectives can also encourage us to reconsider and broaden our understanding, leading to shifts in our beliefs and attitudes.

A child recently immigrated and is now in your class
1. We can welcome this child in into our class community by assuring them of our inclusive views and teaching others in the class to be accepting.
2. We can celebrate this child’s unique characteristics by doing exactly that, celebrating it. Refraining for discouraging the child, and creating catered activities.
3. We can help the other children get to know this child but firstly creating a welcoming environment from the start, implementing dos and don’t for the children to adhere to, and creating activities the children can play together in order to foster a relationship.
-
Asli, your suggestions for welcoming the immigrant child are inclusive, thoughtful, and proactive. Creating a welcoming environment and celebrating diversity are essential for fostering a sense of belonging.

When point of views differ, some respond by defending their own belief. Others may choose to listen quietly. I believe that we can change our point of views when we decide to be open to other ideas. Education is the best way to understand and see things another way.
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. – Wayne Dyer

Great insight, Dyna! Being open to other ideas and perspectives is crucial for personal growth and understanding. Education indeed broadens our horizons. Well said!
