Yes, we can change our views. Things that influence this include new experiences, education, conversations, exposure to different cultures, and personal growth. Life events or changes in society can also make us rethink our perspectives.

    STATEMENTS

    1. A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school.- Strongly Agree – Coming from a country with the most diverse culture having multiple languages and cultures I still find it fascinating to find similarities and differences. It helps children in understanding themselves and their peers.
    2. Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities.Disagree. Having families involved with planned activities should be welcomed. A planned activity where families know expected outcome of the activity can prevent chaos.
    3. All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs.Agree but with identifying points where extra support might be needed and providing that support.
    4. Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. Agree A child’s guardians and parents should decide the values with they want to raise their children.
    5. My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. Disagree. In a daycare or school setup whole curriculum can not be drafted according to individuals interests.
    6. Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. Disagree.
    7. Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. Strongly disgree. Media is biased it only shows information from one side and is highly influenced by political , financial agendas.
    8. The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. Discontinuing will not help in improving situations but having laws and regulations in dealing with foreign countries should help.

Often when our points of view differ, we can either show interest in the other point of view or regard it as a wrong point of view. I would say there are certain instances where we can change our point of view but often it is hard to shift that mindset. Things like life altering events, powerful speakers or movements, the influence of someone we value highly or love, these are all things that often help in shifting our perspective.

Aspects of diversity should be respected. I don’t want any child to feel less than. I do think we should have a baseline though. Everyone should be equal. We could have fun activities that embrace differences.

When two people disagree on something, it can cause many emotions. Many people are passionate about certain topics and their beliefs. People sometimes can respond in anger because the topic is so close to home, and they feel very strongly about their stance. Others might have a mindset of curiosity and interest in learning more about the situation. Not always, but at times people may even change their views based on information they gather. Yet some are stuck in their ways and will not budge. Especially when the subject is something as personal as early childhood learning, many are very set in stone about what they expect for their children. Some parents believe there shouldn’t be diverse educational opportunities, yet others agree, encourage and embrace their child being submerged into something new and exciting. Somethings that can help or encourage someone to change their viewpoint is presenting things from a side they may have not seen. Taking the time to explore the other sides opinion or view. Visually seeing something in action rather than just hearing about it or seeing it written down.

Strongly agree with points 1 and 3.

Agree with points 7 and 8.

    Disagree with point 5.

Strongly disagree with point 4 and 6.

    POV: I believe many things influence my point of view, things such as;

Family, personal values and beliefs, my upbringing and childhood experiences. Religion plays a big part in my decisions and the way I see some things. Past traumas and hardships shape the woman I am. Experiences as a mother and things my children endure have molded me through the years. Things that are happening in the world and in the media play a role. The demographic that one is raised in and the area you call home influences the way I see things. Almost everything around me shapes the person I am and the way that I think.

I think every one of the above describes by themselves what should be done. For me is also about common sense and treat others the way you like to be treated. Inclusion is not just an option, We are just a small piece of a puzzle in a big multicultural world.

Reflect on the ways people respond to one another when points of view differ. Do we ever change our views? What kinds of things influence us to change our perspective?

I think sometimes it can be very jarring to hear that someone may have a completely different way of viewing something. But its important to not just give a knee jerk reaction or to react with anger. We have our views because of what we’ve been exposed to in the world and experiences we’ve faces that shape our values. I think its possible to change views but some compassion may need to come before considering “logic” or “reasoning”. I think when we learn new things about the world it can change our perspective. Or if you have the privilege to travel internationally it can really open your mind to things that were far from your minds each before.
