    To welcome an immigrant child into my class community, I would focus on creating a warm, inclusive, and supportive environment. Here are some strategies:

    1. Personal Welcome:

    <ul data-sourcepos=”5:1-8:0″>

  • Warm Greeting: Greet the child with a smile and a warm welcome, using their name.
  • Introduce to Classmates: Introduce the child to their classmates, emphasizing their unique qualities and experiences.
  • Pair with a Buddy: Assign a friendly classmate to help the new child feel more comfortable and included.
  • 2. Create a Comfortable Environment:

    <ul data-sourcepos=”11:1-14:0″>

  • Visual Aids: Use visual aids, such as pictures or objects, to communicate with the child, especially if there are language barriers.
  • Simple Language: Use simple language and avoid complex sentence structures.
  • Patience and Understanding: Be patient and understanding, as the child may need time to adjust to the new environment and language.
  • 3. Cultural Sensitivity:

    <ul data-sourcepos=”17:1-20:0″>

  • Learn about the Child’s Culture: Research the child’s cultural background to better understand their customs and traditions.
  • Incorporate Cultural Elements: Incorporate cultural elements into classroom activities and discussions, such as music, food, or stories.
  • Respectful Language: Use respectful language and avoid making assumptions or stereotypes.
  • 4. Support Language Learning:

    <ul data-sourcepos=”23:1-26:0″>

  • Language-Rich Environment: Create a language-rich environment by labeling objects, using visuals, and providing opportunities for language practice.
  • Language Support: Provide language support services, such as bilingual aides or language learning programs.
  • Patience and Encouragement: Encourage the child to use their native language and provide positive reinforcement for their language learning efforts.
  • 5. Family Involvement:

    <ul data-sourcepos=”29:1-32:0″>

  • Welcome Parents: Welcome the parents warmly and make them feel comfortable.
  • Communicate Regularly: Establish regular communication with parents, using translation services if needed.
  • Involve Parents in Classroom Activities: Invite parents to participate in classroom activities and events.
  • By implementing these strategies, I can create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment that supports the social, emotional, and academic development of all children, including immigrant children.<tunable-selection-menu _ngcontent-ng-c3834758864=”” data-test-id=”tunable-selection-menu” _nghost-ng-c1035780347=””></tunable-selection-menu>

    1. I would try to find an activity that does not require very much talking if there is a language barrier

    2. I will celebrate the unique characteristics by always showing the positives and not comparing them to other children

    3. I would help the other children get to know them by doing a get to know you activity that is mainly visual to help with the language barrier

    I think developing a traditions week/month would potentially be a good way to welcome families. When I was in school, in my very white middle-class town, we only celebrated the traditional white American holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. It could be nice to offer parents of all backgrounds to come in and share their traditions and cultures.

    1. Strongly agree

    • A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school.

    • All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs.

    • The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations.

    1. Agree

    • Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities.

    1. Disagree

    • My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests.

    1. Strongly disagree

    • Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child.

    • Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up.

    • Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country.

    My Point of View:

    1. My LDS upbringing

    2. My educational background/level

    3. The place I grew up in

    4. The political beliefs my parents had growing up

    I think that it is difficult for people with different points of view to get along or to be able to come to some sort of compromise. I think we can change our views, but I also think that changing our views takes a lot of work. I believe that continued learning is what helps us change our views. I used to believe what my parents believed until I was taught something different that made sense to me.

    1. A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school.
      Strongly agree. I think that learning about different cultures in school can help students learn different perspectives, understand that not everybody is raised the same way, and hopefully gain a respect and appreciation for other cultures outside of their own.
    2. Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities.
      Strongly disagree. When families are involved in classroom activities and actively a part of their child’s learning, it helps with child development and strengthens the relationship between child and parent and also parent and educator.
    3. All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs.
      Strongly agree. It is our responsibility to provide inclusive care because every child deserves the same opportunities.
    4. Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child.
      Disagree. I think this depends on the extended family members and how close and involved they are in the child’s life. I agree in a sense that they should not override the parents but I do think they do have a hand in child development depending on how involved they are in the child’s life.
    5. My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests.
      Agree. I think that it might be hard to base a curriculum of every single child but I think it is important to take each child’s personal interests into consideration when formulating activities.
    6. Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up.
      Strongly disagree.
    7. Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country.
      Disagree. While I think that the media does cover worldwide events that are fairly accurate, sometimes the media can be misleading in the information that it chooses to show and not show. Sometimes biases from those reporting on different events around the country can influence others.
    8. The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations.
      Agree.

    A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school. Strongly agree

    Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. Agree, some families simply don’t have the time and i don’t think it should be a requirement, putting more stress on busy families. However it is great when families can join when they have time.

    All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs. Agree as long as the school has the resources to help these children thrive. “Special needs” is a very broad term, and some schools may not have for example a licensed healthcare provider, which might put certain students at risk. Ideally all schools would have resources to accommodate all children but that is not always the case.

    Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. Agree, depends on the situation

    My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. Agree, interest should be incorporated

    Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. Strongly disagree

    Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. disagree

    The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. This one is tough because human rights violations should not be supported nor encouraged, but then the people who are innocent and having their rights violated need support. Ideally the US could help them to solve the issue.

    Point of view:

    Family, community, media, personal values, politics, location (city/neighborhood), education

    I think point of view can change a lot, sometimes even flipped to the opposite direction. Some views might be set in stone, but others may change when you learn more about it or hear a compelling argument. Also sometimes experiences or events that happen in life cause people to change their view or opinion on something

    Reflect on the ways people respond to one another when points of view differ. Do we ever change our views? What kinds of things influence us to change our perspective?

    If that POV is a value of ours, we often react defensively, believing that a differing POV is an attack on who we are. We do change our views, if we truly listen. Recognizing when a differing POV is simply questioning the action, not ourselves, is when we can separate ourselves from our ideas and change our perspectives.

    People can at time be prejudge against other people just by the way they look,dress or even speak. It’s very shallow and stunts one’s own growth.

    1. Multicultural Education curriculum should be placed in every school. I completely agree with this statement. I feel that it is crucial to have multicultural education curriculum to expose to children to all types of cultures. By doing so, we include children that might not have felt include otherwise, along with teaching other children to be respectful of others.
    2. Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. I disagree. Families should be involved in every aspect of their child’s life, especially when it comes to their education. Open communication serves as a gateway to discussing future plans for the child.
    3. All learning programs need to accommodate all children with special needs. I agree with this statement. Every child should feel welcomed, and be able to have the same opportunities as other kids. The only way to achieve this goal is to accommodate every child’s needs.
    4. Some extended family members may confuse children so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. Extended families should be included in the child’s education, however confidentiality is more important. Every situation is different, but in every situation the voices of the parents should be respected. If a parent does not want an aunt to be involved in the child’s educational experience then that should be honored. It is important to ask the child’s guardian on what they want before taking any action with extended family members.
    5. My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. If there is a way for me to incorporate something several children are interested in, into the curriculum I am teaching then I will. However I would never force such a thing.
    6. Diversity includes race, and culture. Not age, ability, or family make up. I disagree. Diversity shows up in several ways. Including age, genetics, and the ability of the child.
    7. Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. Media sometimes can deliver fair and accurate information, but generally that is not the case.
    8. The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. Agree.

      Kiennah, your insights on multicultural education, family involvement, and diversity are valuable. However, consider the broader definition of diversity and the complexities of media portrayal.
