Great point, Juana! Understanding and respecting diversity starts with knowing each child and their family. It’s a crucial aspect of effective childhood education.

Point of view: religious beliefs and education
Yes, we change our views when for example you are having a debate with another individual who might have more knowledge or has experienced through something similar to what the debate was about. This can change the way you view certain things. Personal stories from others and getting to know them can also to change our perspective.

5. Do we ever change our views? What kinds of things influence us to change our perspective?
– Yes, I think we do change our views. I think we change our views as we learn more or get other perspectives explained to us in a way that enlightens our ideas on the subject. Another thing that may change our perspective is a change in lifestyle, a major life event, a tragic event, or just more education on a topic.

welcoming child that recently imigrated
1. To welcome the child, I would greet them warmly, introduce them to the class, and create a special “welcome” poster with their name.
2. To celebrate their unique characteristics, I would encourage them to share something about their culture, like a favorite story or song, and incorporate it into our activities.
3. To help the other children get to know this child, I would organize simple group activities where they can all play together and encourage questions about each other’s backgrounds.

MemberDecember 11, 2024 at 12:28 am- Multicultural Education curriculum should be placed in every school. I completely agree with this statement. I feel that it is crucial to have multicultural education curriculum to expose to children to all types of cultures. By doing so, we include children that might not have felt include otherwise, along with teaching other children to be respectful of others.
- Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. I disagree. Families should be involved in every aspect of their child’s life, especially when it comes to their education. Open communication serves as a gateway to discussing future plans for the child.
- All learning programs need to accommodate all children with special needs. I agree with this statement. Every child should feel welcomed, and be able to have the same opportunities as other kids. The only way to achieve this goal is to accommodate every child’s needs.
- Some extended family members may confuse children so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. Extended families should be included in the child’s education, however confidentiality is more important. Every situation is different, but in every situation the voices of the parents should be respected. If a parent does not want an aunt to be involved in the child’s educational experience then that should be honored. It is important to ask the child’s guardian on what they want before taking any action with extended family members.
- My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. If there is a way for me to incorporate something several children are interested in, into the curriculum I am teaching then I will. However I would never force such a thing.
- Diversity includes race, and culture. Not age, ability, or family make up. I disagree. Diversity shows up in several ways. Including age, genetics, and the ability of the child.
- Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. Media sometimes can deliver fair and accurate information, but generally that is not the case.
- The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. Agree.
POV
- I was privileged to grow up in a very diverse area. I learned to celebrate everyone’s differences, and I want to teach my students to also celebrate everyone’s differences.
- Families should always be included. When I have my children u would want to make sure I am included in their education. So I will do the same for other parents.
- All children deserve education; no explanation needed.
- As an aunt to multiple children I never get confused about who is who. So that reasoning makes no sense to me.
- If I can keep kids interested in what I am teaching them that would be great. However, constantly trying to connect every child’s interest, and the curriculum would not be sustainable. So I would only do it periodically.
- I know many people with lots of diversity. Diversity shows up in many different ways, and every person is different.
- I have fallen victim to false news before, and always feel the need to double check.
- Preferably; no explanation needed.

MemberDecember 12, 2024 at 5:50 pmI think it is important for us to keep open minds and when we learn new things about others, we can most definitely change our perspective of what we once thought were to be true. Being accepting of others is always important and to never judge. Students come from so many different home situations, backgrounds, and situations that may not always be the best and our job as educators is to help them keep a safe and judgement free environment. And if we see people not responding well to something maybe they aren’t educated on, then we can be the ones to help them gain a better understanding of the situation and help them learn new perspectives.
-
“Taylor, your thoughtful response highlights the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. Recognizing diverse backgrounds and encouraging empathy truly enhances the effectiveness of the Four Corners Activity. Well said!”
-
Taylor, I love how you emphasize the importance of open-mindedness and creating a safe, non-judgmental environment. Helping students understand and embrace different perspectives is key to fostering empathy and respect.

- Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. DISAGREE –
- All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs. DISAGREE – There is a special education department for a reason, if a student needs a paraeducator to help them with their daily activities then the school will be able to provide that for them.
- Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. DISAGREE – children learn from their families at home just as much as they are learning at school. What they decide to teach their children is their own choice, our job as educators is to provide a safe environment for every child and be able to share knowledge about everyone around us. Ww may also share what we are learning at school home to parents so they also have an idea of what their child is absorbing at school.
- My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. DISAGREE – I think it is important to include all of the children for your curriculum, but also the state is making the decision, you as an educator can add things to that curriculum for certain children who have different interests or cultural practices.
- Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. STRONGLY DISAGREE – Diversity is all of the above.
- Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. STRONGLY DISAGREE – there are multiple media/news outlets for a reason. What children and families are choosing to believe at their homes is their own choice.
- The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. I don’t really have an opinion on this one. Mostly because I am just not sure.

MemberDecember 16, 2024 at 8:51 pmReflect on the ways people respond to one another when points of view differ. Do we ever change our views? What kinds of things influence us to change our perspective?
How people respond to one another when points differ is largely based on culture/beliefs, basically how they were raised. We learn how to respond to differing arguments by being taught a specific way or by simply observing others responses. As children develop, it can be possible to change their views as they are still navigating their way through life. Therefore, they are easily molded. As we grow older into adulthood however, changing perspectives can be more difficult. The older you get, the more stuck in your ways you become, therefore its more difficult to be swayed a different direction. Influences that are most likely to be able to change someones perspective is someone who is respected by that person. The more you respect someone, the more likely you would be willing to change your belief to fit theirs.
-
Isabelle, your insight on how culture, beliefs, and respect influence perspective changes is valuable. Understanding the fluidity of views in children and the challenges in adulthood is an important consideration.

MemberDecember 16, 2024 at 11:33 pmHow to welcome a child into your classroom who came from a different culture.
1. To welcome the child, I would let the child introduce themselves, and teach the other kids how to correctly pronounce their name.
2. To celebrate their unique characteristics, we could show the class a unique holiday in that culture and positively compare it to some of our holidays.
3. To help the other children get to know this child, our class could all share their favorite things.
-
Russell, your approach to welcoming a child from a different culture is thoughtful. Encouraging introductions, sharing cultural traditions, and highlighting similarities fosters inclusivity and helps build connections.

Agree
2)Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities.
Disagree, we should expect that they would want to, but not look down on them if they can’t or don’t want to. I know one of my most fond memories is when I volunteered in my kids classrooms.
3)All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs.
Disagree, only if they have the resources and the staff to implement it.
4)Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child.
Disagree, Its all relative😊
5)My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests.
Disagree, that’s a great idea but is it possible.
6)Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up.
Strongly Disagree
7)Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country.
Disagree
8)The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations.
Disagree, we can do things to detour those activities, but we should stay engaged.
POINT OF VIEW
I suppose the Spirit of God guides me to do the right thing.
Some people have little to no toleration to people with differing viewpoints. They get angry and want to exclude others or seclude themselves from others. I think we should embrace others differences and have respectful dialogue to maybe better ourselves and them.
-
One idea to celebrate diversity is to have welcome nights where families can bring food or something special from their culture to share. It’s a nice way for everyone to get to know each other and feel included. Plus, it’s fun for the kids to see things from different cultures.
Another thing is a “World Wall” in the classroom. Families could add pictures, maps, or anything that shows a little bit about where they’re from. It’s an easy way to make everyone feel like they belong and to teach kids about different places.
We could also do cultural awareness days, where we focus on one culture at a time. We could play music, try foods, or do some kind of art project related to that culture. It would be a great way for kids to learn in a hands-on way.
Even just using multilingual greetings could make a difference. Teaching the kids how to say “hello” in different languages could be a fun activity and make everyone feel more welcome.
