I think we are invited to change our views. It’s completely up to each individual to reflect on their views and make a decision whether to embrace new information or reject it. The things that influence us to change our perspective are those that challenge our previous ways of thinking, behaving, or tolerating.

I think people change their views when they are invited, gently, to share a core belief and see the value in an alternate perspective on it. I think seeing success or joy in an opposing view is a tempting way to embrace an alternate perspective.

1. A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school. AGREE, but not to bussing children away from their neighborhood school. The extra transportation time puts stress on the child. Perhaps redrawing school boundary lines to get the greatest diversity or parent’s decision to transport their child on a voluntary or preference basis.
2. Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. AGREE, but if it is possible to include parents in the classroom in a useful, non-disruptive way it could give children more individual help.
3. All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs. DISAGREE. All children with special needs should be integrated with their peers in some type of class on a regular basis, but not ALL classes.
4. Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. AGREE. There is value in extended family having a caring relationship with the child. However, the parent/guardian should be the voice in raising and educating the children they are responsible for.
5. My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. DISAGREE. My curriculum should be BASED on a program that teaches the basics of learning to read, write, have growing math skills, have good listening skills and develop confidence in verbal expression. However, including the child’s current interests makes learning more fun and relevant.
6. Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. DISAGREE. Diversity includes every part of who we are.
7. Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. DISAGREE. I have witnessed a lot of bias in the media.
8. The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. DISAGREE. I believe we should be cautious and limiting with engagement, but the United States is not a perfect nation either. It would depend on the level and kind of “human rights” that were being violated.

POINT OF VIEW- I believe family, religion, education, and political views do influence your point of view in many things in life. I believe it is important as a professional to be open to listen to others point of view, especially of the parents of the children in your care. All while being respectful and understanding of any differences that there might be.

When confronted with different views, a lot of us tend to dismiss it as wrong or incorrect as children. We are trying to model our parents and see their way as the only way. However, other ways exist, and that’s what we need to teach as educators.
