Physically Active Classroom
-
I think in order to create a developmentally appropriate, fun classroom, it is important to know what makes each child unique. Knowing their specific interests or dislikes can allow you to tailor things to better interest them.

I think the best ways to encourage their development through physical activity are songs/activities that go hand-in-hand. At my previous facility, I would set the children up for a ‘dance party,’ and the songs I would use had movements that it instructed the children to do to go along with the song. When they would get tired of these instructional songs, I would find kid friendly versions of their favorite songs from the radio and allow them to dance and move freely to the music, so long as they stayed on their x on the floor. This allowed them to release a lot of energy but kept them from injuring each other.

Keep a routine every day. Or most of the days. Make sure that they have a prepared environment. Allowing the child to do work as they wish. Making sure that the child is interested in at least one thing in the classroom. Giving children choices. Making the classroom a peaceful environment for the child to confidently how about the classroom and find a work with either just them or with friends.

We have yoga pose cards for kids, and we have a movement area inside the classroom. When our class is getting too wiggly then we have a wiggle break and we do movement songs or dance party. Outside the classroom we have obstacle course and large playground equipment that encourages climbing and monkey bars.

Having circle time and calling on children to jump or dance in the center of the circle is a way I’ve seen preschool teachers encourage physical activity in the classroom.

Having a fun song/game that encourages each kid to move around based on what the song says or have them come up with their own movement

During cleanup, I can have my children listen to a song while they are moving around the classroom. I can also have my children get up and dance/move while we listen to songs. Doing morning stretches with the kiddos is also a great way to start their day.

I think it’s crucial to understand what makes each child special in order to design a developmentally appropriate, enjoyable classroom. You can tweak things to better interest them if you are aware of their individual interests or dislikes.

Dancing, jumping in circle games, and plenty of outside time

At the preschool I work at, we do pretty well by teaching the kids new dances and little aerobics/stretching videos incorporated at the end of our screen time activity. We don’t teach new dances all the time, but we do play familiar and new songs in the form of zumba dances or other types of videos that have the watcher mirror the activity of the person leading the activity in the video itself.

Some ways of engaging kids is by using music, kids love music and dancing to it. I like to put on music for kids when they have a lot of energy or when they ask for some tunes. We also have a music basket with instruments that kids can use to make sounds and play with.
