The messages that the WAC’s convey regarding diversity is that children and parents need to be accepted and respected regardless of their culture, religious beliefs, etc. Diversity requires others to be inclusive, understanding and respectful which are all great things for children to learn. The WAC’s encourage teachers to collaborate with families as well as the children to make their experience the best it can be at the childcare facility. Diversity encourages teachers to teach students about other peoples cultures making children feel more included.

There are a few WACs that address diversity but the one I find the most important is <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>WAC 110-300-0325. The reason I find it the most important is because it makes it a requirement that everyone feel included and that no child or parent/family member will feel out of place or unwelcome. How can a child feel safe or like they can express an opinion if they feel ostracized or made to feel different in a situation or an environment where they should feel unique but for something positive instead of negative.
<font color=”rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)” face=”inherit”>Some of the big messages that WACs give are that you as a childcare provider should be open or responsive to different types of families and cultures. Childcare </font>environments should be welcoming to people of all variations.

While I can’t directly access the “Foundational Quality Standards for Early Learning Programs (2019)” or the specific WACs without real-time search capabilities, I can provide a general overview based on the principles typically found in these regulations.
WACs Addressing Diversity and Collaboration with Families
-
Diversity: WACs related to diversity in early learning programs would focus on ensuring that educational materials, activities, and curricula reflect the cultural, linguistic, racial, and familial diversity of the community served. These might include standards for culturally responsive teaching, the inclusion of materials that reflect various cultures and languages, and policies for supporting bilingual or multilingual learners.
-
Collaboration with Families: WACs regarding collaboration with families often emphasize the importance of family engagement and partnership. This might include requirements for regular communication with families, involving families in decision-making processes related to their children’s care and education, and encouraging family participation in program activities.
Big Messages Regarding Diversity and Collaboration
-
Respect for All Families: A key message is the respect for and inclusion of all families’ cultures, languages, and values in the early learning environment. Programs are encouraged to recognize the strengths that come from diversity and to leverage these to enhance the learning experience for all children.
-
Equitable Participation: The WACs convey the importance of ensuring equitable access and participation for children and families from diverse backgrounds. This includes adapting practices to meet the varied needs of families and children, ensuring that no one is excluded or marginalized.
-
Family as Partners: Another significant message is viewing families as essential partners in the educational process. The WACs advocate for programs to work closely with families, valuing their input and collaboration in creating a supportive and effective learning environment for their children.
-
Cultural Competency: The regulations emphasize the need for early learning providers to develop cultural competency. This means understanding and appreciating the cultural differences and similarities within their communities and reflecting this understanding in their practices and policies.
-
Inclusive Practices: Lastly, the WACs stress the implementation of inclusive practices that recognize and celebrate diversity as an asset. This includes creating environments that are welcoming and affirming for all children and families, regardless of their cultural, linguistic, or socioeconomic background.
These guidelines are designed to ensure that early learning programs in Washington State provide a safe, inclusive, and equitable environment for all children and families, recognizing the rich diversity of the communities they serve. For the most current and specific information, consulting the actual WAC texts and the “Foundational Quality Standards for Early Learning Programs (2019)” is recommended.
