    110-300-0160 Promoting acceptance of diversity.

Diverse materials and music are a must in the learning environment. They must demonstrate diversity through cultural groups, age, gender, family structure to represent all children, families and staff. Additionally, bias must be recognized and redirected for both staff and children.

WAC 110-300-0160: Addressing Diversity and Collaboration with Families

WAC 110-300-0160 specifically focuses on the importance of diversity and collaboration with families within early learning programs. This regulation requires that child care providers implement practices that recognize and respect the diverse cultural, linguistic, and familial backgrounds of the children and families they serve.

Big Messages from the WACs Regarding Diversity and Collaboration:

    1. Respect for Diversity:

    – The WACs emphasize the importance of creating an inclusive environment that respects and values the diverse backgrounds of all families. This includes understanding and integrating cultural differences into daily practices.

    2. Cultural Competency

    – Staff must be trained in culturally responsive practices to effectively support and engage with children and families from various backgrounds. This training helps ensure that all families feel respected and included.

    3. Effective Communication and Engagement

    – Establishing strong, open lines of communication with families is crucial. Families should be actively involved in their child’s learning and development, and their input should be valued and incorporated into the program.

    4. Family-Centered Approach

    – Programs must adopt a family-centered approach, recognizing the critical role that families play in their child’s education and development. This involves partnering with families and providing them with the support and resources they need to be actively engaged.

    5. Inclusivity in Practice

    – The WACs require that child care centers implement inclusive practices that accommodate the needs of all families. This includes providing materials in multiple languages, respecting cultural practices, and ensuring that all families can participate fully in the program.

By adhering to these principles, early learning programs can create a supportive, inclusive environment that fosters collaboration and respects the diversity of the families they serve.

If I was a teacher I would make sure that the new student would feel very welcoming by doing a culture day or learning about new cultures and learning something new with the students and making sure that the new student feels welcomed in the classroom it is important that the student feels that they belong in the classroom at all times. And learning the new cultures in always good way to make a lesson plan and adding things to the classroom would also help the new student feel welcomed in the classroom because they would feel happy if they saw items that they see at home feel excited to share and to teach the other students about their culture.

If I were welcoming in a new student from a diverse background, I would invite the family to share their favorite traditions, foods, games, etc… I would also collaborate with the parents about how to best serve their child in our learning environment. I would create ways to communicate easily, through apps, posters, visuals, etc… It would also be important to discuss any special accommodations with staff. Celebrating their unique culture would model an attitude of acceptance, curiosity and inclusions to ther students.
