The biggest messages these WACs share about how we can create safe, diverse spaces is to intentionally make space for all people and their identities. To foster belonging, we must give careful attention to how we show up and how we make all people feel seen and welcomed.

MemberSeptember 4, 2024 at 12:53 amWAC adresses diversity in a number of its codes, such as WAC 100-300-0160 States that an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Which means we must make our class, or resources and equipment as diverse and inclusive as our students are. Every child should see themselves and their families in their classroom, in the books they read, the part acting they do and the printed material on the walls.

1. WAC 110–300-0160, Promoting Acceptance of Diversity
2. The WAC gives a message to accept diversity and appreciate what people of different cultures have to offer to the center’s program. It advises to listen to others of different cultures and appreciate their experiences.

What do the WACs say about diversity?
WAC 110-300-0160: Promoting Acceptance of Diversity.
To provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. To use equipment and materials that include diverse toys, games, music and so on. To stop biased behavior and stereotypes. Programs that can celebrate diversity and have special events for the family.

I would welcome the child with love and support and have them introduce themselves to the other children. Coming from an ethnic background myself it’s hard to fit in with certain groups but I would create a space for the child or children to share their differences and learn more about each other. I would celebrate the child by creating a family tree and/or start sharing their traditions.

MemberSeptember 6, 2024 at 5:13 pmWhen I was in high school, we had a multicultural week where everyone in the school brought food for a food fair from their culture. They’d wear traditional clothing. Then give presentations or discussions if they wanted about their cultures and everyone loved it. Even if you didn’t necessarily have a culture to showcase it was still very fun and enjoyable so I would love to somehow integrate that into my class as well as during the holidays make the holidays teaching moments so as to include everyone and not just make the holiday about the holiday. Such as learning about Hannukah or black history month.
-
Mekhia, integrating multicultural experiences and inclusive holiday teachings fosters diversity and collaboration, creating a rich learning environment for all children. Great ideas!

1) WACs sections 0080-0085 addresses diversity and collaboration with families.
2) Parent’s are the childrens primary educators. Childcare providers should work with parent’s and provide the necessary support in order for children to thrive to the best of their ability.
-
Noung, great points on the importance of collaboration with families and supporting children’s development in a diverse early childhood setting. Well done!
