I would encourage the child to introduce themselves and talk about their family, their background, special foods they enjoy, and traditions they follow at home. In the classroom, I would incorporate materials that represent various cultures, including books about different cultures, and picture books featuring characters from diverse backgrounds. I would emphasize that cultural diversity is something to celebrate and embrace. For younger students, we could discuss foods or music from different cultures, and even try foods or listen to music from those cultures. Other children would be encouraged to include the new child in play and activities, ask questions to learn more about their culture, and explore basic words in the child’s language or aspects of living in another part of the world.

WAC 110-300-0085 states that “an early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals. Communication with families and children are a very important and effective part of child development. By having communication, we can understand individual children and acknowledge what they need, and what situation they are going through.

Non- discrimination is very crucial in learning process, and ” WAC-110-300-0030 addresses non-discrimination by stating that early learning programs are “places of public accommodation… and must not discriminate… on basis of race, creed, color, national origin, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, class, age, religion or disability.”). Caregivers and early learning program providers must consider this law as one of top priorities.

2.What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration?

Considering diversity is very important in an early learning program because it’s the beginning of a student’s life in a society, and each action of caregivers will strongly affect their emotions, and these effects will stay with them forever. State law requires child care employees to honor all children’s race, religion, culture, gender, physical ability and family structure, and to provide families with information on their child’s progress in the center. Providing all information about their child’s progress with families can include their families effectively in their child’s thrive, education, and development.

As a childcare provider, the messages the WACs (Washington Administrative Codes) convey regarding diversity and collaboration are clear and vital for maintaining an inclusive, respectful, and cooperative environment. Here’s how I interpret these key messages:

    1. Diversity: The WACs highlight the importance of recognizing and respecting the cultural, linguistic, and individual diversity of children and their families. This means that as providers, we must actively create an environment that reflects the various backgrounds of the children we serve. This involves incorporating culturally relevant materials, celebrating different traditions, and respecting each family’s values, language, and needs. The goal is to ensure that all children feel seen, valued, and understood, regardless of their background or abilities.

    2. Collaboration: The WACs also emphasize the need for strong, respectful partnerships with families. Collaboration is not just encouraged but required, ensuring that parents and caregivers are involved in their children’s learning and development. As a childcare provider, I must maintain open communication, actively seek parent input, and work together with families to support each child’s growth. This extends to collaborating with other professionals, such as specialists, to ensure children with special needs or developmental challenges receive the support they need.

In essence, the WACs promote a holistic approach to early childhood education where diversity is respected, and collaboration is a cornerstone of building strong relationships with families and the community.
