In my experience, I was able to assist my students better with educational engagement once I got to know their interests. Implementing characters or things they liked into a lesson while still making it educational was very helpful. For example, while teaching my students about the alphabet and working on helping them build connections with words that start with the same letter, every Friday my lead and I would have the children bring in a toy or object that begins with the respective letter of the week. Another suggestion for cultural enrichment curriculums is having the students bring a food originating with their culture. This can give students exposure to different cultures, while also giving them an opportunity to communicate and connect with their peers.

One way my team does this effectively is by making all of the arts and crafts educational. We start by asking the children questions about a topic related to the function of the craft we are making or modeling our art after. We also do this with games to make learning new things fun and interactive.

As we get to know a child, it becomes easier and more individual how to add items of interest into a variety of settings. If a child is showing specific interest in a topic, it may be useful to embed some examples or lessons surrounding that topic – lessons, circle time, added toys, etc.

Some meaningful ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning are: Using musical materials, playing and/or singing songs, dance, put on a puppet show. Children love to play, especially when important adults in their lives play and be silly with them. Using supplies that engage their senses, through texture, color, smell, and anything that allows free egression and allows them to create to their hearts desire.

I feel that making learning fun for kids is key. One way to do it is through hands-on experiments where they can dive into science and learn by doing. Then, there’s nothing like a good ol’ scavenger hunt to get them exploring nature and sparking that love for the outdoors. And I like to throw in some experiments like perfume making kit and slime-making, It’s all about mixing education with imagination.

Some creative ways to get children in engaging and meaningful learning involve picking learning topics that you have found that children previously expressed interest in and also ensuring that the learning challenges the children as well.

Cater to each child’s uniqueness and explore questions as their curiosity is integral to their growth.

We can have children engage creatively by having them do activities that revolve around their personal interests or culture. Activities like share and tell, building structures that are related to their culture, or playing games that are unique to different cultures.

What are some creative ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning?

song singing, art making, book reading, doing a play with children, acting out the learning, using toys, using colors and shape matching, and using fun demonstrations to make it appealing to younger children, as to not make it a lecture or lesson, but an activity they can do with you and others to make the most of the learning experience

Asking simple open ended questions that get the kids interested. Why questions are always good. and What do you think if… it also depends on the age of the children.

Engaging children in active, meaningful learning can be achieved through hands-on activities and interactive experiences. Use storytelling and role-playing to make lessons come alive, allowing children to act out scenarios and explore different perspectives. Incorporate arts and crafts to help children express their creativity while reinforcing concepts. Outdoor exploration, such as nature walks and gardening, connects learning to the natural world and encourages curiosity. Integrating music and movement through songs and dances makes learning fun and memorable. Additionally, using games and technology can captivate their interest and make abstract ideas more concrete and understandable.

A creative way to help children get engaged in active meaningful learning is to ask them questions about what they are doing. By asking them critical questions you are getting them to think more about the activity they are doing. For example, if they are reading a book about animals, you can ask them about their favorite animal and have them look up some facts about it if its in the book.
