you can get children engaged by asking them lots of open-ended questions when their doing something. For example, if they’re in the play kitchen making food you can ask what they’re going to be cooking today.

MemberJuly 2, 2025 at 6:16 pmSome creative ways to get children engaged in active, meaningful learning include using hands-on activities like sensory bins, art projects, or science experiments that encourage exploration and discovery. Incorporating play-based learning through pretend play, storytelling, and games makes learning fun and relatable. Outdoor learning, like nature walks or gardening, connects children to the environment and supports physical development. Following children’s interests and letting them help plan parts of the day gives them ownership and motivation. Music, movement, and interactive group activities also help keep children engaged while building social and cognitive skills.
-
Great insights, Reagan! Your suggestions beautifully emphasize hands-on learning and student ownership, fostering curiosity and engagement.

<strong data-start=”227″ data-end=”243″>Pretend play – Set up areas like a kitchen, doctor’s office, or grocery store where kids can use their imagination.
-
Great suggestion, Samya! Pretend play fosters creativity and social skills, making learning both fun and meaningful for children.

Communicate often and clearly with families. Greet them warmly every day and share updates about their child. Listen to their concerns and show respect for their ideas and culture.
-
Great insights, Samya! Engaging families fosters a supportive learning environment and enriches children’s educational experiences.
-
-
By planning activities that are developmentally appropriate for the age group is always a good place to start, but also by trying circle time when reading a book, or a game when we have to clean up the room, or allowing the children chances to share about their lives outside of the classroom such as show and tell.

MemberJuly 6, 2025 at 1:09 amIt is important to begin an activity by building on what a child already knows, as this approach supports meaningful learning and reinforces prior knowledge. For preschool-aged children, introducing themes such as cause and effect can promote curiosity and critical thinking. One effective activity might involve a simple science experiment using a basin of water to explore which objects float and which sink. This hands-on experience encourages observation, prediction, and reasoning. Another engaging cause-and-effect activity involves color mixing—blending primary colors to create secondary colors such as green, orange, and purple.Providing each child with their own set of materials allows for individual exploration and supports the development of independence while making learning more personal and engaging. These types of activities not only align with early childhood learning standards but also help children make concrete connections through interactive discovery.
-
Great insights, Anne! Your emphasis on prior knowledge and hands-on activities truly enhances children’s engagement and fosters critical thinking skills.

MemberJuly 7, 2025 at 6:58 pmGetting children engaged in meaningful learning can look like many things, but at the basis it should always encourage children to think critically about why or how something happens. It is important for children to hypothesize and guess why something occurs, rather than to tell them right away. It is also important to create lesson plans that will keep students engaged and interested. One activity that I recall from my early childhood was keeping caterpillars in the classroom to observe them as they changed into butterflies. Activities like this will keep children engaged and interested in the reasons and outcomes, which will set them up for better success in later schooling.
-
Great insights, Marissa! Encouraging critical thinking and hands-on activities like observing caterpillars truly fosters meaningful learning experiences.

MemberJuly 7, 2025 at 9:51 pmOne creative way to spark meaningful learning is by asking children how an activity connects to their everyday life. For instance, if they’re coloring, you might ask, “Where have you seen this color before?” to help them make personal, real-world connections.
-
Great insight, Chaelynn! Encouraging real-world connections enhances engagement and deepens understanding. Keep fostering those meaningful discussions!
