Whether it’s exploring with playdough, creating open-ended art, or role-playing everyday scenarios, these activities help kids learn through doing and imagining.Outdoor time is great for discovery, like nature walks or gardening, while stories and acting build language and thinking skills. Music, movement, puzzles, and simple experiments encourage creativity and problem-solving.Including children’s cultures in activities helps them feel valued, and small group projects teach cooperation. Asking thoughtful questions throughout keeps kids thinking and excited about learning.

We can also ask questions such as what type of animals they like or don’t like & why… any pets they have at home, what are their names and maybe why the pet was named that… etc. Those are just some examples (probably more age appropriate for preschool, pre-k & upper levels).

You can have dramatic play with purpose, project based learning, creativity based exploring, give the children real life jobs that they can help in the classroom. Games, music, & movement help get children engaged. If you are having fun then they will see and hear that and want to have fun as well.
-
Great suggestions, Michelle! Incorporating play and real-life experiences fosters engagement and meaningful learning for children.

One of the best things you can do as a teacher of young children is asking questions. Rather than supplying an answer to a question, do your best to guide children to the answer themselves. This encourages their development as learners, where they build confidence in their ability to think for themselves, rather than solely absorb the information given to them.
-
using pretend play, inducing imagination, letting children have the chance to explore on their own before we come in and help. open ended questions and movement based games.
-
Plant Pets: Let each child decorate a small pot and “adopt” a seedling. Give it a name, draw a face, and make a growth chart to track daily changes.Keep the AnticipationWhat Will Happen Tomorrow? Board: End the day by letting kids predict or imagine what might change with their plant/doll overnight. This builds excitement to return and check!
-
Great ideas, Chi! Your approach fosters creativity and anticipation, making learning interactive and memorable for the children.

MemberJuly 12, 2025 at 5:03 pmEngaging children in active, meaningful learning means creating opportunities for them to explore, wonder, create, and connect ideas to their everyday lives. I believe this type of learning should be hands on and emotionally resonant. Using project based learning allows children to investigate a topic over time. Children use exploration, ask questions, and participate in collaborative work when provided the opportunity to do project based learning. An example of project based learning would be learning the life cycle of a caterpillar or lady bug, and then trying to raise/hatch a caterpillar or lady bug in a classroom with the students. Children will learn through instruction as well as real life circumstances.

Great insights, Antonia! Your emphasis on hands-on, emotionally resonant learning through project-based activities is inspiring and impactful.

Use open-ended materials like blocks, loose parts, and dramatic play props to encourage exploration. Pretend play helps develop social skills, problem-solving, and creativity (e.g., “Let’s open a pretend bakery!”).

Great suggestion, Gazelle! Open-ended materials truly foster creativity and collaboration, making learning both fun and impactful.

In order for you to get children involved you have to understand what they are interested in or what grabs their attention. Incorporating their interests into a lesson or relating it to the activity can help encourage the child to meaningfully engage. You can also attempt to make lessons into a different format such as a game or physical activity to help keep children engaged.
