To keep them interested, show them pictures of animals, fruits, and veggies. Get them playing with colors, Play-Doh, and puzzles. There are lots of fun things to do, like telling stories, celebrating special days, and making paper crafts!

One innovative way to have children learn about diversity and embracing each other’s differences is by conducting a day wherein the center hosts a meal and participates in activities that honor the culture of every child. It’s a pleasant way to welcome students who might be of varying cultures and backgrounds. You may be able to teach the children a few words in the home language and possibly have some traditional dances or paintings to help them celebrate cultures of students.

Kids learn best through fun, active things like play, music, hands-on activities, pretending, helping with real tasks, going outside, and using what they’re interested in.

Some creative ways to get children engaged include using hands-on activities, open-ended play, and following their interests, like turning a love of dinosaurs into a digging and counting game. Add songs, movement, storytelling, and sensory play to make learning fun and interactive. Giving children choices and letting them help lead activities also boosts engagement and ownership.

One way to engage children is by asking questions and involving them in a lesson. You can ask for their opinion on something, or ask if they know the answer to something or give them a chance to guess before continuing.

Playing with sensory bottles, finger puppet play, have tummy time, play with rattles, sing nursery rhymes, play peek-a-boo, painting with dot markers, exploring a “treasure” basket, playing with sound toys, scrunching up paper, looking at photos, reading a book, popping them in a cardboard box are meaningful learning activities.

Engage in real life examples. During a walk ask a student what a specific sign nearby means. You can also test print awareness through questions such as “What is the first letter of the word “STOP” on the stop sign.

To get children engaged in active, meaningful learning you can set up pretend play scenarios. Some hands on learning could be using real materials like water, sand, or clay.

Having hands-on activities so they can engage more with the activity, embrace story telling so it can help the visually with the activity.

I think it helps to consider what naturally excites or inspires the children. Keeping activities fun and short can prevent frustration or loss of focus. I also try to make sure the activity includes every child and is easy and quick to explain.

I would encourage the use of open-ended questions in the classroom, and encourage children to ask questions about the day’s theme during circle time. Providing children a way to speak freely about their thoughts can be a way for them to participate more actively in learning.

Activities could include circle time, arts or craft activities, creative/dramatic play, etc. While engaging in these activities, additional ways to get children engaged may consist of asking them questions, making connections/asking them to make connections to their life/family/world (i.e., asking about the food they eat or the people in their family), and taking students’ interests into consideration when planning activities. Additionally, one must be mindful of students’ different abilities or interests and account for these when planning and enacting these activities.

If you make things a game or make something a song, children are more likely to engage.
