One of the best ways to get children engaged in active and meaningful learning is to connect activities to their natural curiosity and interests. Hands-on experiences such as sensory play, science experiments, or building projects allow children to explore concepts in ways that feel fun and exciting. Storytelling, dramatic play, and role playing encourage imagination while also helping children practice language and social skills. Offering choices is another powerful strategy because when children feel a sense of ownership over what they are doing, their motivation increases. Outdoor learning can also be very engaging, whether it is exploring nature, planting a garden, or using chalk to practice letters and numbers on the playground. Music and movement activities help children stay active while reinforcing patterns, memory, and rhythm. Most importantly, framing learning as play, rather than a chore, allows children to see it as enjoyable and rewarding, which creates a deeper and more lasting impact.

I think the best way to get kids engaged is to play to their strengths. If a child learns better by being active, then merge academics into movement—like turning math into a game of catch or spelling into a movement activity. Rewards and encouragement go a long way too, and I always remember that kids love to get messy, so hands-on, creative play is often where the best learning happens.

    1) Provide developmentally appropriate materials that encourage open-ended play 2) Provide tasks that challenge students 3) Appeal to children’s different learning preferences. Provide activities that appeal to various learning styles, such as visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learners.

Engaging children in active, meaningful learning necessitates creative and innovative approaches. One effective method is incorporating project-based learning, where children work on real-world problems that pique their interest, allowing them to apply knowledge practically. Another strategy is utilizing technology through interactive applications that gamify educational content, making learning fun and dynamic. Additionally, integrating the arts into the curriculum can foster creativity, encouraging children to express their understanding through music, painting, or theater. Lastly, experiential learning, such as field trips or hands-on experiments, deepens engagement by connecting lessons to tangible experiences. These methods collectively inspire curiosity and enhance retention.

To get children engaged I would say to incorporate music and movements when outside. Also to encourage them to play with other children.

Children can be engaged in active, meaningful learning through hands-on exploration with materials like blocks, sensory bins, or simple science experiments, as well as through dramatic play that lets them act out real-life roles. Storytelling, puppetry, music, and movement bring creativity and energy into learning, while outdoor activities such as gardening, scavenger hunts, or nature walks connect lessons to the world around them. Project-based activities centered on children’s interests also encourage curiosity, problem-solving, and collaboration.

my biggest thing is make learning fun and engaging. Make sure you can tie in an activity or even a fun song when learning something new so it is easier and more enjoyable for the children to learn and retain that information.

Asking open-ended questions and volley back and forth continuing the conversation. Sometimes if I know that they like something specific (dinosaurs, trucks, hello kitty, etc.) or an event had happened/is happening I would ask them more about it. Why, how, what, or who are always great started to get them to talk to me. Sometimes music helps too to get some kids to join in.

Some creative ways to get children involved and engaging would be by asking them meaningful questions that they have to think about and by providing them with different activities that require them not only to think about but also to problem solve.

In my experience, having multiple different avenues for children to explore the same learning seems to be the best way to manage trying a new activity. Providing different avenues can ensure all children’s interests are being taken into account.
