Observation helps educators and caregivers provide developmentally appropriate activities and allow them to individualize curriculum to meet the specific needs of each child. Documentation helps give a snapshot for educators to refer to when providing new activities and experiences. It can also show a provider or educator where a child may need more help or where they are excelling. Red flags may then start to appear if there are specific continual patterns.

How does observing and documenting a child’s development help early learning providers?

Through observation in an early learning environment, a provider is learning about the child’s individual overall development. With thorough documentation, the early learning provider can set expectations for the child, work within the child’s developmental domain, change their curriculum, offer support/accommodations, check for differences in development, and finally, have material ready for families to have input on their child’s developmental progressions.

Knowing how a child should be progressing, will really help when signs start to point to a problem in development, as an early child educator it’s important to understand that you have these children for a good chunk of the day and watching children interact, play games, and learn can really tell you a lot about the child’s development.
