WAC 110-300-0085 states that “an early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals.” WAC-110-300-0030 addresses non-discrimination by stating that early learning programs are “places of public accommodation… and must not discriminate… on basis of race, creed, color, national origin, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, class, age, religion or disability.State law requires child care employees to honor all children’s race, religion, culture, gender, physical ability and family structure, and to provide families with information on their child’s progress in the center

The WAC’s emphasize the importance for early childhood education programs to create a healthy and welcoming environment for all children and families, regardless of background. Promoting diversity inherently encourages collaboration among all different kinds of children in these settings, and it will set them up to continue that as they become adults.

1: WAC 110-300-0085 states that “an early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals.” It is vital to take the diversity of each child’s developmental goals and their unique backgrounds into account when collaborating with families. 2: The WACs imply that it is a vital responsibility of the education center to collaborate with families to ensure their child’s development. They also require the childcare center to respect family’s race, religion, ethnicity, culture, and family structure. What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration?

The WACs that address diversity and collaboration with families include those under <em data-start=”84″ data-end=”114″>Inclusion and Equity of Care (WAC 110-300-0030, 110-300-0160, 110-300-0300), as well as WAC 110-300-0055 on developmental screenings, and the broader section on <em data-start=”247″ data-end=”283″>Family Engagement and Partnerships. Together, these emphasize that early learning programs must provide equitable and inclusive care that respects cultural, linguistic, and family differences, while also maintaining open, respectful, and reciprocal communication with families. The big message is that diversity and collaboration are core to quality care, requiring providers to adapt practices and environments so that all families feel welcomed, supported, and empowered in their child’s development

WAC 110-300-0030 states that Early Learning Centers must not discriminate based on several factors. I appreciate the expanded definition on sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, and gender identify in this WAC. The big messages the WACs give are that all are welcome and should feel welcome (employees, students, and families).
