MemberSeptember 8, 2025 at 8:31 amThe Washington Administrative Code (WAC) highlights the importance of diversity and family collaboration in early learning programs through specific regulations. WAC 110-300-0215 emphasizes fostering an inclusive environment that respects diverse backgrounds, which is crucial for equitable access to education. Similarly, WAC 110-300-0220 focuses on engaging families as partners in their children’s development, ensuring that their cultural perspectives are acknowledged and valued. The overarching message from these WACs is clear: promoting diversity enriches the educational framework, while collaboration with families enhances children’s learning experiences. Together, they create a supportive community that values each child’s unique identity and encourages holistic development.

Great insights, Kamiko! You effectively captured the significance of diversity and family collaboration in enhancing early learning environments.

A WAC that helps define diversity is WAC 110-300-0030. It outlines that early learning programs are defined by state law as places of public accommodation that must not discriminate in employment practices or client services based on many things such as race, creed, color, national origin, sex, honorably discharged veteran or military status, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ability. The big messages that the WACs give regarding diversity is that no matter who a person is or from what background they come from that you should welcome them and embrace their culture and all the things that make them who they are. To be open and receptive to learning about what in their life has led to where they are now and who they are continuing to grow as.
-
Which WACs talk about diversity and families?
WAC 110-300-0030 about nondiscrimination, WAC 110-300-0085 about partnering with families, and WAC 110-300-0160 about promoting acceptance of diversity.
What’s the big message?
The WACs make it clear—respect all families, include all kinds of diversity in the program, and work with families as partners. Inclusion and collaboration aren’t optional, they’re required. -

It’s essential to select resources that reflect various cultures, languages, and perspectives to foster inclusivity and challenge stereotypes effectively. A book I will recommend is “A hand full of bottoms”

Great insights, Saga! Celebrating diversity through inclusive resources like “A Hand Full of Bottoms” fosters understanding and acceptance in the classroom.

MemberSeptember 19, 2025 at 8:53 pmThe main WACs I could find that talk about diversity and collaboration with families within a childcare setting would be WAC 110-300-0160 “Promoting acceptance of diversity”, WAC 110-300-0085 “Family partnerships and communication”, and WAC 110-300-0325 “Creating a climate for healthy child development”.WAC 110-300-0160 “Promoting acceptance of diversity” Big Message- An early learning provider should be committed to providing culturally and racially diverse curriculum, activities, music, books, toys, and media within the classroom which represent the children and staff in the classroom. Educators are committed to redirecting any racial or culturally insensitive comments and teaching the children to be accepting and loving towards their friends that are different from them. WAC 110-300-0085 “Family partnerships and communication” Big Message- Teachers within an early learning center should be committed to creating relationship with parents/guardians of each child within their care, no matter their culture or race. They should ask questions to learn more about each child and be respectful when learning about other peoples cultures. They should work towards making families from different cultures feel represented, supported, and accepted.WAC 110-300-0325 “Creating a climate for healthy child development” Big Message- Professional educators should be committed to valuing and respecting every child under their care. They should be validating and responsive to each child’s needs. They should work towards inclusivity in play and conversations and promote diversity within the classroom, including representation of all cultures in toys and media around the room.

MemberSeptember 26, 2025 at 8:46 pmThe WACs make it clear diversity and inclusion is a big part of early childhood education in Washington State and should be embraced. While some might think it leaves too many openings for people to find loopholes, I believe it sets a basic groundwork while still allowing classrooms to customize curriculum specific to their class makeup and needs.
-
Matt, your insights on the balance between diversity, inclusion, and customization in early childhood education are thoughtful and pertinent!
