The WAC is 110-300-160 that promotes acceptance of diversity in ECE. The intent is that the Provider must provide culturally, racially, and ability-based diverse learning opportunities. This should be done in a mindful and respectful manner of children and their families, as well as staff.

WAC 110-300-0085 states that “an early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals.” WAC-110-300-0030 addresses non-discrimination by stating that early learning programs are “places of public accommodation… and must not discriminate… on basis of race, creed, color, national origin, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, class, age, religion or disability.” State law requires child care employees to honor all children’s race, religion, culture, gender, physical ability and family structure, and to provide families with information on their child’s progress in the center.

The WACs say that early learning programs must respect each family’s culture, language, and background. They ask teachers to work closely with families and learn from them. Programs should use diverse books, toys, and activities that reflect all children. The big message is that every child and family should feel included, valued, and respected.

    1. WAC 110-300-0085 and WAC 110-300-00302. Overall early learning programs should repect everyone for who they are, no matter where they are from or what languages they speak, their beliefs etc. It is important to provide strong relationships with famlies and maintain open communication. There is no discrimination allowed at all.

the wac has a section that covers discrimination and what it looks like, things like not treating everyone equal and singling people out based on their differences. One way we can challenge this is by posting important information around the classroom in different languages in addition to english.

Beyond WAC 110-300-0030 which addresses nondiscrimination, diversity is addressed in WAC 110-300-0160 – an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. This can take the form of music and books from different cultures and a diverse offering of dolls, games, and pictures. It also means proactively addressing stereotypes and refusing to ignore bias. WAC 110-300-0085 address collaboration with families to understand child’s individual development goals. This includes understanding linguistic, cultural, and social information. Beyond that it says that an early learning provider must determine how best to accommodate a child’s characteristics, strengths, and needs informed by family beliefs and culture. Early learning providers must have regular check-ins and give space for families to communicate with them. The big message is not only can early learning providers not discriminate, they must proactively seek to showcase and embrace diversity to make all children and families feel welcome and included.
