MemberMay 21, 2024 at 1:45 amExplain that 20 minutes may not seem long to the parent, but it affects the child who is the last to be picked up and the extra staff that need to stay at the facility. Urgent matters may come up, but being respectful of the school’s regulations and staff’s time is common courtesy and isn’t acceptable for this to be occurring so often. If it continues to be a pattern, matters may have to be taken more seriously. If a parent is consistently late picking up their child, it is important to <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>address the issue right away. Communicate with the parent and try to understand why they are having difficulty arriving on time. If necessary, come up with a plan to ensure the child is picked up on time

Lalitha, your response demonstrates a thoughtful and understanding approach to addressing the issue of late pickups by Mrs. Hopkins. You have highlighted the impact of her lateness on both the child and the staff, emphasizing the importance of respecting the school’s regulations and staff’s time. Your suggestion to communicate with the parent and understand the reasons for their difficulty in arriving on time shows empathy and a proactive approach to finding a solution. Overall, your response reflects a professional and compassionate perspective on handling this challenging situation. Well done!

MemberMay 21, 2024 at 9:34 pmby frequently being late this effects the child as they are the last child there for the day and they can sense something is off, explain to the parent that we know its only 20 mins and that isn’t a long time but it happening more than once will soon become a issue with the childcare or with the child having to wait and the teacher having to stay extra hours because of a mistake that keeps happening.

Ill care for the kid for the meantime but if the Parent is way too late ill reach out to the Parent first and if i was not able too then ill contact the emergency contacts. Ill talk to the Parent and see if everything is okay and if theres anything that we can do to help

I would begin by asking the parent if they had time to talk.
I would talk about the things that their child is doing well with specific examples.
I would then gently bring up the topic of timing. And I would word it something like “Are you aware that our center closes at 6pm.” or “just wanted to let you know that .. . . ”
And then, I would end with more positive things about their kid.

MemberMay 22, 2024 at 9:13 pmI would try to explain the effect it is having on Lily. And then ask if we can make a plan or an alternate pick up person so this happens less.
-
Natalya, your response shows empathy and understanding towards the impact of Mrs. Hopkins’ late pickups on Lily. It’s important to address the situation while considering the child’s well-being. Suggesting a plan or an alternate pickup person is a proactive approach that can help minimize the impact of late pickups on Lily. This solution-oriented mindset reflects your commitment to creating a supportive and stable environment for the child. Well done!

MemberMay 25, 2024 at 11:43 pmII agree with this, I have in my policy late fee schedules. I need open comunication from the parents if they will be late. If it seems to be consistent i would ask for an evening phone call or parent teacher meeting. I would explain to the parents that this is affecting the child with being the last to be picked up.
-
I will explain to the parent 20min it’s not long for parents but for children it is when child watching other parent picking up their children they will feel pretty sad. also staff have to wait as well have to be respectful and show responsibility.

Sit down with her and have a open and honest conversation about how this can affect you as a caregiver and how this can affect the child while being stuck and taken out of their routine. Maybe talk about how to best set up a system to insure that this stop’s occurring.

MemberMay 30, 2024 at 10:46 pmValidate the parent and their needs by saying you understand how busy they must be, and that their responsibilities must be very demanding. However, gently and firmly remind them of center closing time, and that each child needs to be picked up on time.
-
Heather, your response demonstrates empathy and understanding towards the parent’s situation while also asserting the importance of respecting the center’s closing time. It’s important to communicate with parents in a respectful and understanding manner, and your approach of gently reminding the parent of the closing time aligns well with maintaining a positive and supportive relationship while also upholding the center’s policies. Well done!

MemberJune 5, 2024 at 11:34 pmIf this is a family that is consistently late and we’ve already discussed with them about it, it’d be necessary to have a more serious conversation including admin to facilitate. If this family has not been talked to about being late before, it may be a good opportunity to ask if there is a reason for them being late repeatedly (ex: change of schedule, change of home life, moving, divorce, picking up other children, etc.) in hopes that we’d be able to help them problem solve.
