If I suspected child abuse or neglect, I would promptly report my concerns to Child Protective Services.
I would document observations, ensure the child’s safety if necessary, and provide support to the child while maintaining confidentiality. Cooperation with authorities and seeking guidance from colleagues or supervisors would be essential in handling the situation appropriately.

MemberMarch 25, 2024 at 7:20 pmIf I suspect child abuse or neglect I will contact CPS even if I suspect that certain injuries or bruises may be accidental. Because I am a mandated reporter it is my job to do so if I even suspect and I will not let the parents know that I’m going to make a report .

MemberApril 3, 2024 at 5:31 pmI witnessed abuse as a teacher and reported it. Parent abused her son right in front of my class and another teacher. By law, as mandated reporters, we had to report this. Another time, I witnessed staff abusing a child and had to report it. This happened at 2 different jobs. Both of those people are no longer allowed to work with children.

The child’s wellbeing comes first, and it is my job as a care provider to report any potential abuse. If I were to suspect any abuse, I would take it up with my supervisor for further information on policies, how to report it, and more.

MemberApril 10, 2024 at 5:51 pmI think if you suspect anything, you should at least immediately talk to a supervisor if you need advice, or report right away. There’s no telling what could happen or get worse, and the Childs safety is top priority.
The worst that can happen is that there are no findings in an investigation, but that means that the child is safe, and any potential danger was stopped.

MemberApril 11, 2024 at 4:58 amIf I suspected abuse I would bring it to my lead teacher’s attention. Share my concerns with them. Follow up with the director. Bring it to CPS’ attention and report all new information to CPS without making the parent/guardian aware.

I would report it immediately. I’d document what I observed, cooperate with investigations, and ensure the child’s safety. I’d also maintain confidentiality while fulfilling my legal duty to report.

MemberApril 16, 2024 at 3:10 amChild First Always is a principle that honors and protects all children. This includes keeping them away from harm in all scenarios and is part of the ethical responsibility of the Lead.
However, it is also the responsibility of the Lead to not make and present assumptions that are going to be critically damaging to the individual. Studying and commitment to antibias and antiracist principles is the most just-driven approach to ensure providers are knowledgable with complete information.
