MemberNovember 4, 2024 at 4:55 pmI would first bring up my concerns to the lead teacher or site coordinator to make them aware of the possible abuse / neglect situation. If we are both on the same page with our concerns I would then ask them for guidance on how to report the situation to CPS.

As a childcare provider, I am mandated by law to report child abuse and neglect whether I have proof or not. Things that I can do is remain calm for the child and create a safe place within myself for them. I’d pull that child aside and speak with them privately while reassuring that they aren’t in trouble and listen to any concerns they might have without pressing for details.

If I suspected child abuse or neglect, my first step would be to remain calm and focused while documenting any specific observations or concerns in an objective and factual manner. I would look for consistent patterns or signs, such as unexplained injuries, changes in behavior, poor hygiene, or disclosures from the child. After that, I would promptly make a report of suspicions to the proper authority, such as Child Protective Services (CPS) or an appointed supervisor, because it is legally required of mandated reporters. It is important to give specific, detailed, and accurate information and make sure that the safety of the child has been secured. I will refrain from confronting the suspected abuser directly or making assumptions about the situation; instead, my role is to report, not investigate. Throughout the process, I would prioritize the child’s well-being, offer them support, and follow my organization’s policies and state regulations for handling such situations.

MemberNovember 21, 2024 at 7:13 pmI would like to talk to child first and try to understand what happened ,I will include questions that would help child give me more detailed info. If I am assured its a case of child abuse or neglect, i would go ahead and report it to DCYF

If I thought a child was being abused or neglected, I would write down what I noticed, like bruises or changes in how they act. Then, I would call Child Protective Services or the right local office to report it. It’s important to stay calm, not jump to conclusions, and keep the child’s safety my main focus. Reporting doesn’t mean blaming someone. it’s about making sure the child gets help.

I would discuss the situation with the lead teachers and program heads. Next I would contact CPS and make a report. I would closely observe the child in the following days, taking notes of any relevant information. I would also do my best to provide comfort to the child in any way possible and continue to build a trusting relationship with them.

MemberNovember 27, 2024 at 5:29 amBefore becoming a preschool teacher, I was a licensed social worker. I made a lot of calls to CPS. If i suspect that a child is being harmed or neglected, I would first talk to my supervisor and let them know my concerns. Then I would call CPS and file a report. It’s better to make the report and be wrong than to not make the report and be right.

However, recurrent bruises, gradual withdrawal of a child amongst many other signs definitely push me towards reporting the occurrences to CPS. It is my first and foremost duty to keep children under my care safe.

I would let the admin know before going any further. Then I would follow up with the parents or guardians of the child(ren) if I am allowed to do so and if they act in any suspicious way or try to avoid the subject, then I would contact CPS. The child(ren)’s safety will always come first and so doing what I believe is the right thing to do is what I will do in order to keep them from harm’s way.
