If I suspected child abuse or neglect, I would act immediately by following my role as a mandated reporter. I would document what I observed, respond calmly and supportively to the child without asking leading questions, and report my concerns to Child Protective Services (CPS) through the ENDHARM intake line. If the child were in immediate danger or needed urgent medical care, I would also contact local law enforcement or emergency services.I would not attempt to investigate or interview the child. If the concern involved myself or program staff, I would notify my licensor as required. Even if I was unsure, I would still make a report, because reporting is about protecting the child and seeking help – not proving abuse.

Great response, Mita! Your understanding of the mandated reporter role and prioritizing the child’s safety is commendable.

When talking with a child, I will <strong data-start=”818″ data-end=”916″>stay calm, reassure them, use their words, and avoid pressing for details or promising secrecy

Ensure the child’s immediate safety. If the child is in immediate danger, I would call emergency services right away. Report the suspicion to CPS immediately. I would contact Child Protective Services as soon as I suspect abuse or neglect—without waiting for proof and even if the injuries might be accidental. Do not investigate or interview the child. I would not question the child, confront caregivers, or attempt to manage the situation myself, since investigation is the responsibility of CPS. Document objective observations. I would record factual details such as dates, times, visible injuries, statements made spontaneously by the child, and behaviors—without adding opinions or conclusions. Maintain confidentiality. I would only share information with CPS or appropriate authorities and would not inform the parents unless directed to do so. Continue to report new concerns. If additional injuries or incidents occur, I would make a new report each time, even if CPS has already been contacted about the child. Follow program policies. I would follow my organization’s mandated reporter policies and cooperate fully with CPS if they request access to records or interviews. This approach protects the child, fulfills mandated reporter responsibilities, and ensures the situation is handled by the proper authorities.
