MemberFebruary 28, 2025 at 10:04 pmI would try not to jump to conclusions first, but if I thought one of my children in my care were possibly being harmed or neglected, I’d talk to my supervisor and talk to them on what the policy should be. It is mandated that we report any ounce of belief if we think a child may be getting hurt, but I’d definitely talk with my supervisor to move forward with it so they can help take plan of action and help me contact CPS.

If I suspected child abuse or neglect, I would immediately follow the steps outlined by the mandated reporter guidelines. First, I would contact Child Protective Services (CPS) or the appropriate law enforcement agency to report my concerns. I understand that I am legally required to report any suspicion of abuse or neglect, even if I don’t have all the facts. I would ensure I follow the proper procedures for making a report, keeping in mind that it’s better to report and let professionals investigate than to stay silent.
I would not attempt to interview the child or handle the situation myself, as that is the responsibility of CPS. I would also avoid informing the parents about the report, as this could potentially put the child in more danger. Finally, I would document everything carefully and make sure I am following the policies set forth by my program, knowing that my responsibility is to protect the child and ensure their safety.

MemberMarch 6, 2025 at 2:52 amAs a mandated reporter, I must identify and report any suspected child abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services (CPS) immediately. My role is to prioritize the child’s safety and allow CPS to investigate. Reporting is a step to protect the child and connect families with support.

MemberMarch 12, 2025 at 3:17 pmIf I suspected child abuse or neglect, I would take the following steps:
1. Document Observations Carefully
– Write down what I see, hear, or notice (e.g., physical signs, behavior changes, concerning statements from a child), using objective and factual language.
2. Follow Program Policy
– Immediately report concerns to the designated person (such as a director or supervisor) according to my center’s or organization’s policies.
3. Make a Mandatory Report
– As a mandated reporter (which child care providers are in Washington), I would call Child Protective Services (CPS) or the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) intake line to report the suspicion.
• Washington CPS/Child Abuse Reporting Line: 1-866-ENDHARM (1-866-363-4276)
4. Keep Confidentiality
– I would not discuss the situation with others not involved in the reporting process to protect the child’s and family’s privacy.
5. Continue Supporting the Child
– I would offer a safe, nurturing environment and maintain normal routines to help the child feel secure.

MemberMarch 15, 2025 at 5:42 amI must contact CPS if I even suspect that certain injuries or bruises may be accidental. I must contact CPS if you see signs of emotional or sexual abuse or physical neglect. Even if I have made a report to CPS about a particular child earlier, I must report each new injury or incident.

MemberMarch 17, 2025 at 1:21 amIf I suspected any type of abuse I would first observe and check the child, ask the child (if they are able to) what happened, if child seems scared or cannot recount, or even if they can but it just does not make sense, I would then approach the lead and director to verify and/or guide me to the next steps. Contact CPS if needed, or local authorities if it is more urgent/immediate.
