You must contact CPS if you see signs of emotional or sexual abuse or physical neglect. Even if you have made a report to CPS about a particular child earlier, you must report each new injury or incident. Do not attempt to interview the child or to manage the situation yourself. Both interviewing and investigating are the responsibility of CPS. The phone number for CPS should be among the emergency numbers posted by each telephone in your program. In most circumstances, you should not inform parents you are making a CPS report. Your parent handbook or posted health policies should inform everyone that you are mandated reporter and that you will report any suspicion of child abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
-
Great job, Nee! Your thorough understanding of CPS protocols and mandated reporting is crucial for ensuring child safety.

-
If I suspected child abuse or neglect, I would follow protocol and report it right away. As a male teacher, I take my responsibility to protect children seriously. I’d document what I observed, stay calm, and make sure the child feels safe while getting the proper help.
-
Great response, Abdirahman! Your commitment to following protocol and ensuring the child’s safety is commendable and essential.

MemberApril 27, 2025 at 8:05 pmIf I suspected child abuse or neglect, I would take the following steps, keeping in mind that my primary responsibility is the safety and well-being of the child: Document my concerns: I would carefully and objectively document the specific observations or information that led me to suspect abuse or neglect.Consult with a supervisor or designated authority: I would immediately report my concerns to my supervisor or the designated child protection contact person at the childcare facility. I would share my documented observations and seek guidance on how to proceed.Make a report to the appropriate authorities: I understand that childcare providers are mandated reporters. This means that I have a legal obligation to report any reasonable suspicion of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate child protective agency (e.g., Child Protective Services) or law enforcement.Support the child: Throughout this process, I would prioritize the child’s emotional and physical safety. I would provide a supportive and nurturing environment, and I would be sensitive to the child’s needs and feelings.

Natasha, your response is thorough and demonstrates a strong commitment to child safety. Great job emphasizing documentation and support!

If I suspect abuse and neglect in one of the children in my care my top priority is protecting them, and I know that I am unable to do that alone, thus I would report to my immediate supervisor to get help in reporting the suspicion properly and protecting the child in the ways that I am legally able to do.
