Can you think of an example of a person who had a significant early childhood experience that impacted them in the future, whether good or bad?

I myself was hospitalized in 1st grade. My classmates made cards and they were brought to me by my teacher. To this day that teacher remains a strong part of my memory and emphasizes how empathy and kindness are long lasting.

I think most everyone has had some type of experience that has impacted them in either a good or bad way. Divorce, abuse, support, love, laughter, fighting, relocating, stability, all have an impact on a child’s life one way or the other.

My daughters have trauma from our past domestic violence and we have worked really hard with therapist and themselves on when they get triggered. I have shared some of this with their school and teachers and how to best help them when my youngest shuts down due to her trigger. Some of the staff will think she is overreacting when she gets into her fight or flight mode and can’t function and just yell at her. So they see it as disobedience when in actuality it is a trauma response.

Going to kindergarten was my first time in an educational setting. My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Owens was important to me as the first time I was introduced to a trusted adult who was not related to me. Her kindness and care were invaluable and grew a sense of learning within me.

When I was in preschool I was told by the teacher that she knew who my sister was and I better not act like she did. That effected me negatively, because I remember feeling like I was a bad kid and scared of getting in trouble each morning on my way to school.

I have a current co teacher that constantly smiles and will dance, sing and be silly with the kids. I have very rarely seen her any other way and the kids absolutely love her. I think this is due to the positive attitude and how she interacts with the children. She’s amazing and this truly makes a difference l.

My friend’s daughter Maya was about five, and she constantly took apart household items-remote controls, toys, even her dad’s old radio. Instead of getting frustrated, her parents encouraged her curiosity. They gave her small, safe tools and old appliances to take apart and explore. Maya is now confident in building things.

We have mostly 2 and 3year olds in our class this year. I have noticed if the volume is raised in the classroom, all l have to do is lower my voice to a relaxed calm tone and the children will follow. They react to their surroundings.

My experienced, as I worked in the facility a life long impact of the child is a positive being raised with warm, firm parenting can lead to a healthy development, while a negative like abuse or neglect can lead to a long term issue such as insecurity, health problems and difficulty forming relationship.

My niece went to a dentist when she was very young. She needed dental work, but was a fearful of laying there and trusting that the dentist was there to help. Instead of helping her feel safe she remembers them being condescending and frustrated in turn scaring her more leading her to get more aggressive and wet her pants. I know a lot of parents in my program had bad experiences, feelings of unsafe. Fight or Flight response, leading them to not taking their own children to the dentist. In reflection if the professional would have approached the situation with my niece in a more positive way and kept their composure a little longer, then maybe the trauma would not be affecting the generations.

My daughter had a wonderful preschool experience that helped her form a more positive relationship with peers, teachers and her thoughts regarding school. She was having a very difficult time because we moved when she was three years old and wasn’t doing well with the transition. Instead of putting her in a traditional school setting we opted to out her in a small quaint preschool run out of the teacher’s basement. The way her teachers were so loving, kind and happy instantly eased my daughter’s nerves and any fears she had about changing schools. I am forever grateful to those teachers and them taking the time to make my daughter feel welcomed and loved.

I had significantly different early learning experiences when i had a teacher who was strict and grumpy, compared to when I had teachers who were firm but kind and happy. I think it’s always important to have a safe classroom and be firm when needed, but just as important to have trusting relationships and a positive environment.
