making up a rhyme, story, or song can be a great way to get kids engaged with washing their hands, something they might otherwise find boring.

I believe one way that we can make washing hands more fun and engaging for the kids would probably be to come up with a song, also explaining to them why we wash our hands .

Singing a hand washing song that reminds them which parts of the hand they need to wash always (nails, in between fingers, palm, back of hands, etc.)

A couple things I have tried in the past was finding our “hand washing song”, any child appropriate song works, and we would have specific dance moves that makes sure we focus on our own body and leave our friends space alone and focus on your “foam monsters”. We use moves like: wiggle your fingers like a spider, octopus and do the twist and scrub. To make it more pizzazz we could use glitter but we try not to because it is messy.

Singing a song like Happy Birthday or a different handwashing song is a fun way to teach handwashing.

You could encourage the kids to sing songs like happy birthday to make sure they are washing their hands for the correct amount of time. Or you could incorporate a handwashing cart with stickers where kids get to add a sticker each time they wash properly.

A way to get kids engaged in washing their hands would be singing a song and having visuals.

Using songs or making it into a game using paint and seeing who can get their hands the cleanest.

There are so many ways to make learning interactive. We used to do a lot of science projects and one of my favorites was the effect of certain drinks on our teeth. Another interactive approach we used in Pre-K was exposing the children to earning money, bank accounts, paychecks, banking, and spending their money on either a movie theater or bake sale (alternated each year).

I will sing a fun hand washing song with the kids as they wash their hands, and they enjoy singing it while they wash their hands.

I make handwashing fun by singing silly handwashing songs with the kids, like a playful version of “Baby Shark” that reminds them to scrub, rinse, and dry. We also do a “bubble challenge” to see who can make the most bubbles—it turns handwashing into a fun game they actually look forward to!

What are your favorite hands-on science activities for young children? How do you make these activities engaging, fun, and encourage children to ask questions and make observations?I love them to experience the life cycle of a plant, and have them engage in the process of planting. Children love to explore in nature, like gardening, and make discoveries about the environment. By having this activity, children raise questions and curiosity about why we need to bury the seeds and what will happen to the plant after we plant them. I love to make a song about the activity we just did. When washing the hands, I liked using the song London Bridge melody so washing hands could be fun and learn good hygiene at the same time.
