As mentioned before, I like to have my students choose different colors of paint and go around the classroom shaking hands with their friends. As they are moving around, they notice that their once solid, clean hands are no longer clean and now have a bit of color from everyone in class. I then have them wash their hands for at least 20 to 30 seconds to see who can come out with the cleanest hands.

I would maybe have different scented soaps so the children feel excited to try washing their hands and enjoy new scents.

Using unscented lotion and glitter to show how germs spread. Singing a song during handwashing to help them see how long they should wash for.

To make handwashing fun and exciting for the children, we can opt for singing together to ensure enough time has passed for a proper hand wash.

To make hand washing more fun for our kids, is sing a song and allow them to do the steps encouraging them on the way. Telling them they are doing a good job, so independent! Makes them happy, they are so young still that they really want to do things on their own because they are just learning how. So I guide them to turn on the water, get soap, make bubbles! rinse, turn water off, and get a paper towel… then throw away! They are always so happy to climb up the stairs and wash their hands. I just enjoy so much seeing their faces light up when it is their turn. 🙂

A fun way to engage with handwashing is to try different textures, colors, scents of soap (if allergies permit). Try a foaming soap vs a gel soap – see if which you can get more bubbly. Try mixing different soap colors. Also singing the ABCs during handwashing, and having the letters displayed near the sink can help reinforce letter recognition and ensure the proper amount of time you need to spend washing.
