Some of my favorite hands-on science activities for young children include planting seeds and observing growth, exploring magnets, simple sink-or-float experiments, and making homemade volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar. To make these activities engaging and fun, I like to use colorful materials, let children make predictions, and encourage them to touch, explore, and experiment on their own. I also ask open-ended questions like “What do you notice?” or “Why do you think that happened?” to spark curiosity and help them observe carefully and think critically. These activities are not only exciting but also help children develop problem-solving skills, language to describe observations, and a love for exploring the world around them.

Some of my favorite hands-on science activities for young children are finger painting and slime making. It gets the children engaged and messy hands always calls for washing hands really well. Especially with slime as it takes a bit longer to get off the sticky goo.

Put glitter glue on one child’s hands as “germs” and have them spread it to another child, etc until all the children have “germs” on their hands. Talk about how the germs spread, then have everyone wash all the germs off, using the handwashing steps.

We sing a song while washing hands that incorporates all the steps.

We have song we do for the kids; they can have fun but also remember the right way we wash are hands. The first part is tops and bottoms in between the teachers also sing along with them

I have worked in ABA and I have found with children on the spectrum, sometimes hand washing might not only be boring, but also a huge fear or sensory issue. However, it is very needed for health! My favorite trick is finding a toy they love and having the kid give that toy a bath. I have had great success with this and would recommend it to others.

Using a “training lotion” that glows under UV light to make a game or competition out of washing hands.

My favorite hands on science activity to engage in curiosity and observation is using pipettes and beakers to mix primary colors to create secondary colors. They hypothesize what two primary colors will create a secondary color. They use the pipettes to transfer the colors to each other.

My favorite handwashing activity is singing the ABC song, because it is long enough for clean hands and fun to sing together.

How do you make handwashing a fun and exciting activity for kids in your care?
Let kids decorate their own soap bottles with stickers, googly eyes, or markers. They’re more likely to use something they created!

Having them sing a song like twinkle twinkle or even using colorful soaps to have them feel more engaged in handwashing but also making sure they are washing their hands for enough time.
