GuestAugust 9, 2025 at 4:35 pmWhen I first started, I just assumed that the children knew how to wash their hands because they came from other classes to mine and they washed their hands there too. Well…. I have learned that re-teaching is very necessary and helps so much. Placing visual posters by the sink, washing your hands with the students, and singing a “Scrubbing Song” not a “rinsing” song with the kids has helped along with visual videos about handwashing on the computer!

GuestAugust 11, 2025 at 7:18 pmI think the most fun I see in science projects with my students is cause and effect. They are incredibly amazed at the results, or they ike to make the result, and guess what might happen. The guesses are the best. Watching a child mix baking soda and vinegar, then seeing their reaction to the reaction is priceless. Also when it gets hands on it’s more exciting and they actually remember the concept.

GuestAugust 11, 2025 at 7:30 pmnot sure if they still do this in school but I remember in 1st grade a teacher using a special lotion on our hands that glowed with a black light, we would wash our hands to see if we got it all off after learning how to wash our hands and I remember thinking this was so fascinating. it also really helped me have a visual understanding of dirt/germs!

GuestAugust 14, 2025 at 8:14 pmI like to make up songs with children to encourage them to wash their hands, and sometimes make up silly stories about the bad germs getting washed away!

GuestAugust 15, 2025 at 8:13 pmSome ways to make handwashing fun are:-Sing a handwashing song that encourages children to do certain actions while washing, so they are entertained and get the correct amount of time cleaning themselves.-Draw a picture in washable marker or use a washable stamp on their hands and tell them to wash until the picture disappears-Provide a sanitized, lightly textured toy for the child to “give a shower”, encouraging them to do so in a way that scrubs their entire hands (front and back)-Set a washing timer using a sensory timer or a 20-second video, reminding them that they have to wash their hands for the whole time-Use different kinds of soaps (shaped bar soaps, soap bars with textured fabric, different smells) to keep children interested and engaged
