It is also important to have the kids visit farms, zoos, etc to experience and see other animals also.

I think animals are a great idea for the classroom. We had introduced a pet study this year and the children loved it! They shared about their animals at home, what they like to do, and we learned a lot! We even had pets visit the classroom from snakes to dogs! It was a lot of fun!

They can help to show children different types of care, habitats, what different things eat and how they live. It can also teach patience, kindness, and caring.

As far as advice to other teachers, I would recommend low maintenance pets. for example, our program has fish and a gecko. the children watch the fish swim and we discuss the different types of fish and where they can live, what they eat, and we let the kids feed them too. the gecko is something they can hold, and they observe it’s habitat as well.

Yes, I have seen how they help students develop responsibility when they are tasked with a certain aspect of caring for that class pet. It can also help to expose the child to animals they may otherwise not see or interact with as many people do not have pets. I have also seen teachers have students each summer who take the class pet home and care for it over the summer (with lots of communication between parents and teacher prior) and this has led to the child growing even more in their ability to have and handle responsibility and care for others.

I believe animals create a whole different level for teaching, it brings in so many different lessons and conversations. Almost every age group has something to gain from bringing in a pet. Being able to plan a whole week around nature and animals and assigning roles for the kids will teach a lot of responsibility and I’m sure they will be super engaged.

I do believe animals can effectively teach children. For example, a class pet may encourage responsibility and a sense of kindness. A service dog visiting a school can help to calm and ground the students during instruction as well as educate them on the many uses of animals.
