There are multiple ways but one of my favorites is the feeling dot video and books. In these books they state that feelings are like dots that come to visit us but are not us. There are other ways to do this such as having a chart of faces that show different emotions.

Take a moment to step back and breathe. Realize that the situation can’t always be solved by just you. Have a safe and open conversation with a coworker or someone you trust. Remember that if you aren’t feeling 100%, it’ll affect how you interact with the rest of the children as well.

some examples of responsive exchange could be to listen to the child when they are talking, acknowledge them even if you are busy and let them know you will give them your full attention in a minute. provide them with safe, supportive and loving environment. Help them work through their emotions.

Exactly. Too many child care providers think they should stand on the sidelines and watch. They say they are observing, but it is not interactive and the child doesn’t bond or learn from the adult.

There are children’s songs that involve jumping and when we used to do it when I was little, a lot of the kids are very much involved with the dancing and got a lot of laughter from it. In the mornings, have time to play some relaxing music and show them easy and developmentally appropriate stretching exercises.

You can make it fun by singing, playing a game showing them how good it is for them to grow up.

I’ll give them a tour of the classroom first to show them the safety of the indoor space their child will be in and show them safety exits. I’ll also show them where we keep our first aid that should be easily accessible.

I would bring it up to my lead teacher to see if it is a viable concern because she has been in the classroom for over 20 years. We would then see if we should escalate it to administration, who would then help us contact CPS. Since I work in a toddler class, I’m not sure if directly asking the child will get us any information.

My biggest worry about keeping children safe currently is the world that we live in and the social-political climate. School shootings have gone from something out of the norm to something to be expected, and that terrifies me when it comes to keeping the children safe.
