It is common for a child to adopt the beliefs and ideas of their parents as their own. This is why it is so important to be able to understand and discuss a child’s family and their unique beliefs as opposed to your own. A child will be able to more closely identify with you as a teacher if you can relate with their family’s beliefs and diversity; to discuss your own diversity and beliefs as if they are superior or the norm is misleading for your students. All beliefs, customs, and aspects of diversity are equal and should be both respected and discussed. Straying from “the norms” in a classroom will benefit your class as a whole.
