When at the carpet or circle time in my program we ask the kids in trivia games every once in a while, about hygiene to get them more engaged with remembering hygiene rules. This has improved the children’s attitude on whether or not it’s important to wash hands.

One cleanliness activity we include to make cleaning a little more fun is giving everyone a cleaning wipe and making it a competition for who can have the dirtiest wipe. You can even include a prize for the person with the dirtiest wipe.

In our class, we play a question-and-answer game, where I ask challenging questions about hygiene and cleanliness, and they answer to earn a sticker. We can also do fun things in the future involving demonstrations with silly songs to sing while washing our hands and tap dances while brushing our teeth. They love things like that!

Making cleanliness lessons engaging for kids in a home daycare often involves turning them into fun, interactive experiences rather than just a chore. One of my favorite creative activities is the “Glitter Germ” experiment. I’ll start by explaining that germs are tiny, invisible things that can make us sick. Then, I’ll put a small dab of hand lotion on each child’s hands and sprinkle a generous amount of glitter, telling them the glitter represents the “germs.” I encourage them to touch different surfaces – their toys, a table, or even give a high-five to a friend – and then we observe how the “germs” (glitter) spread. This visual demonstration proves that germs are everywhere and easily transferred.Following the glitter experiment, we move to the sink for a thorough “Germ Wash Dance Party.” I put on some upbeat music, often the “Happy Birthday” song twice or a specific handwashing song, and we practice washing our hands with soap and water for the entire song. We lather up, scrub between fingers, on the backs of hands, and under nails, pretending to “scrub away” all those stubborn glitter germs. Combining the visual “germs” and the active, fun handwashing routine helps the children understand why cleanliness is essential and how to do it effectively, making a typically mundane task something they look forward to.

I turn clean up into a game by playing “beat the timer” I set it for 2 mins and the kids have to race to clean their area before the timer goes off. I would also “use the clean up song” where we work together to clean up. this would make it fun for them

When it comes to cleaning, we always emphasize this before dismissing them to centers and before mealtime and potty time. We explain that we have to use soap and give it a good rinse so that germs are killed. If you don’t do so, we will easily spread the germs into the toys or to others so it’s important that we wash our hands.

i teach kids about cleanliness by making it part of our daily routine in fun ways. before meals, we always wash hands and i have little posters by the sink to remind them how to do it right. sometimes we sing a silly handwashing song so they know how long to scrub. during mealtimes, i talk about how clean hands help keep us from getting sick, and we joke about washing the “yucky germs” away. we also clean tables together before snacks, even if they don’t look dirty, just to show that being clean is still important. one fun thing we did was draw our own germs and give them funny names. it made the kids laugh but also helped them remember why we wash our hands.
