I find that finding activities to turn off my brain for a bit help me to decompress during breaks, like scrolling on a phone, adding things to my grocery order, or watching a show. It is a mental break, that leads to natural responses like slower heart rate, deep breathing, etc. I also find that making sure my needs are met throughout the day is very helpful. I always bring a large water bottle and snacks, and eat when the children eat, or between activities as needed. I keep chapstick and chewing gum in my pockets because both are sensory items for me that I find regulating, rather than ignoring a dry throat or chapped lips all day, which could be frustrating.

Michelle, your strategies for self-care and stress relief are insightful! Prioritizing your needs is essential in maintaining well-being.

These help me stay calm, present, and compassionate while supporting children through emotional moments.

MemberJune 18, 2025 at 6:39 amI like reading or meditating during my break, but I find sometimes being silly or tickling is a good mood shift for you and the kids after a meltdown. Depends on situation, though, as sometimes everyone just needs to breathe be treated with gentleness.
-
Great insights, Audrey! Balancing lightheartedness with gentleness is key to managing stress effectively in emotional situations.

Taking a step back and placing a child in a safe place ten feet away can help me calm down. That, or having a quick snack if part of my stress is caused from hunger.
-

Relaxation exercises (deep breathing, yoga) help with calming the nervous system. Help children find time for enjoyable activities like hobbies or spending time with loved ones.

Things I found to release stress is removing myself from the area and taking deep breaths, and also taking that time to think what made me stress what I can do to make things better, and what I can do next time if something like that situation happens again.

MemberJune 25, 2025 at 6:37 pmWhile at work it is hard to do some of my regular stress management techniques. For instance, I love crafting but it’s not something that I can do at work while tending to the kids. One thing I have found helpful instead, is focusing on my breath and putting on music on the cd player.
-
Great strategies, Maria! Focusing on breath and music can create a calming environment for both you and the children.
