just stepping out for 4-5 minutes sometimes can make a world of a difference, when i start feeling myself getting excessively overwhelmed i will let my co teachers know hey i need a few and will step out get some fresh air sip some water recollect myself and come back in, its ok to need a few minutes to reset sometimes were human, and were working with children and teaching them how to express their emotions, thus we are taking them in too, your not a bad teacher, and you didnt fail your students if you need a few minutes its totally ok!

Music and deep breaths are my go-tos for stressful moments. Focusing on lyrics I know, along with my own breathing, provides familiarity in what may be a foreign or discomforting situation.

MemberJuly 16, 2025 at 8:17 pmtaking a few deep breaths, stepping outside for fresh air, and grounding myself using the “5-4-3-2-1” method (five things I see, four I can touch, etc.). I also find that journaling or talking to a trusted friend helps me reset. When I stay calm and regulated, I can respond to children with compassion instead of frustration.

Great strategies, Rachel! Your focus on self-regulation and mindfulness will greatly benefit both you and the children.

I’ve found that having a designated time each week just for myself is helpful in reducing my stress. I won’t answer calls or texts and I just do an activity that I enjoy. It helps me ground myself and relax.

MemberJuly 21, 2025 at 10:05 pmIt’s very rewarding to work with children, yet sometimes it can be emotionally exhausting, so having ways to let go of stress is truly essential. For myself, allowing a few quiet moments to myself between breaks, even just to breathe deeply or go outside for some fresh air, can be a huge help. Talking about the day with a supportive colleague or friend makes me feel supported and reminds me that I am not alone. I also find it helps to recharge by doing something active or creative outside of work, like journaling, walking, or listening to music. Self-care makes it easier to present with patience and energy to the children every day.
-
Great insights, Salwa! Your self-care strategies emphasize the importance of balance in our rewarding yet demanding work with children.
