One thing is accepting that they are just children and dont understand that they are making your job a bit harder sometimes when they all have needs that need met at the same time. Children are vulnerable and need support. And sometimes they all need it at the same time and it might be difficult and stressful but i know that they dont understand the difficulties of caring for all them at once and all they know is they need us.

Working with children is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding, so it’s important for early learning providers to find effective ways to manage stress. One helpful technique is practicing mindfulness or deep breathing throughout the day to stay grounded and centered. Taking short breaks, even for a few minutes, can offer a chance to reset and release tension. Journaling at the end of the day can also help process emotions and reflect on meaningful moments. Talking with a trusted colleague or friend who understands the challenges of the job can provide emotional support and relief. Physical activity, such as walking, yoga, or even dancing, is a great way to release stress and boost your mood. Engaging in creative hobbies like painting or music can be both therapeutic and enjoyable. It’s also important to set healthy boundaries by leaving work at work when possible and saying no when you need personal time. Lastly, celebrating small wins and recognizing the positive impact you’re making can help maintain motivation and joy in your work. Taking care of your own well-being is essential to being able to care effectively for others.

There are several effective techniques for managing and relieving stress, especially in the emotionally demanding field of early childhood education. Personally, I have found that maintaining healthy sleep habits is essential for overall well-being and emotional regulation. In moments of stress, I practice deep breathing combined with a short meditative prayer—the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ (inhale), have mercy on me, a sinner (exhale).” Additionally, I find that taking intentional breaks for prayer, reflection, or engaging in relaxing activities such as reading or crafting helps me recharge. These strategies support my ability to remain calm, focused, and present in my work with children.

The main techniques I have are taking deep breaths and walking away from certain scenarios. Sometimes it’s ok to ask for a bathroom break just to calm yourself down.

I enjoy playing with my cat, pets are known stress relievers and can help with stimulating the release of oxytocin. I also practice deep breathing, elevating my legs and taking a walk while listening to an audiobook.

I find it helpful to be self aware of my emotions and what I am bringing into the classroom that day. Important to be as fed, rested and calm as I can be. Then if I notice my heart racing, sweaty palms, racing negative thoughts and frustration, it is a note to see if I can deep breathe in the moment, slow down my decision making and actions, find an activity child and I can do together that is more calming. If that does not work, I may communicate with other teachers if they are available to switch children with me or if I can take a moment to take a break for 5 minutes.
