Taking short breaks, deep breathing, talking with a supportive coworker, journaling or going for a walk after work helps me with releasing stress.

I like using “Ah” breathing int the classroom: Inhale: Lift your shoulders up toward your ears and squeeze your body. Exhale: Release while saying “ah” and bringing your shoulders back down.

While I’m in the moment, I always remember to relax my jaw. You don’t realize how much the tension can build there and by simply relaxing that area you can lower your heart rate. Deep breathing is also great before, during, and after a stressful situation. For me the best reset is moving my body, usually through walking.

Daily meditation and gratitude list when I get up helps to put me in a positive mindset. Playing guitar after work helps me to unload the stress of the day and talking with an old friend or relative helps when there are particular issues I need to discuss

Really accepting that children have emotions and that it’s ok. Staying positive. Stepping away for a brief break and asking another staff to help so I can reset, take a breath and get something to drink, then returning.

Take Short, Mindful Breaks Even a few deep breaths or a quick walk outside can help reset your mind. Try a simple mindfulness exercise: close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on the present moment for one minute. Connect with Colleagues Share experiences, laugh, and support each other. Sometimes just talking with someone who understands can make a big difference. Practice Gratitude At the end of each day, jot down one or two positive moments or things you’re grateful for. Focusing on the good can help balance out tough moments. Move Your Body Gentle stretching, yoga, or a brisk walk can release tension. Even dancing to your favorite song can lift your mood! Set Boundaries Give yourself permission to say no when you need to. Protect your personal time and avoid taking work stress home whenever possible. Engage in a Hobby Spend time on activities you enjoy outside of work, such as reading, gardening, crafting, or listening to music. Practice Self-Compassion Remind yourself that it’s okay to have hard days. Treat yourself with the same kindness you offer the children in your care. Seek Support When Needed Don’t hesitate to reach out to a supervisor, counselor, or support group if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Taking care of yourself helps you be your best for the children in your classroom.
