MemberAugust 20, 2025 at 4:29 amI find myself walking away and counting to ten in my head before I dive back in a situation. Reading is also so helpful as it distracts your mind and focus into a book. Grabbing a cup of coffee and going for a walk is also a good way of de-stressing.

Great techniques, Melanie! Taking breaks and engaging in activities like reading and walking can truly enhance emotional resilience.

When walking away is not an option, deep breathing is. Realigning my thoughts is also helpful to understand why I am stressed.

MemberAugust 21, 2025 at 2:00 pmOne technique I use to release stress is taking short breaks for deep breathing or stretching during the day—it helps me reset quickly. Outside of work, I find that walking, journaling, and listening to music are very effective ways to let go of tension. Talking with trusted peers or mentors also helps, since sharing experiences reminds me I’m not alone in the challenges of this work.
-
Here are the steps I follow to reduce tension: I start by drinking a glass of water to refresh myself. Then, I make a cup of tea or coffee along with a sandwich or snack. I take time to enjoy my food while scrolling through social media to relax. I play my favorite music and dance to lift my mood. Finally, I go to sleep. Sleeping helps calm my mind, release stress, and I wake up feeling refreshed and full of new energy.

MemberAugust 23, 2025 at 4:54 pmI’m still working on managing my stress. It’s a challenge sometimes because I want to report to my superiors, but they want me to make the right decisions on my own. So far, one thing I do, which is something I try to teach the children at work, is to walk away from the situation for a bit. In the moments where a child might hit another child, sometimes simply saying “walk away” helps. They often hear my words and find something else to preoccupy their time. As for my stress, I take the same mantra on, too. If I’m frustrated in the moment, I walk away and reorganize something on a shelf for a minute or two. I take the time to come up with a new plan for handling a situation and come back to it. This is something I only do if it’s not causing harm to others. If children are fighting with each other, then I intervene, but if it’s a calm, relaxing environment and I start to become frustrated with a situation, I walk away and come back.

Deep breathing and mindfulness are helpful in the moment of stress. Outside of the acute moment of stress, listening to music and dancing, spending time outside in nature, spending time amongst friends, and reading are all things I do to regulate and help minimize my stress responses.

Absolutely – working with young children is both joyful and emotionally demanding. Taking care of yourself is essential not just for your well-being, but for the children who rely on you. Taking stress-release techniques for early learning providers is very important like, deep breathing and mindfulness, journaling, move your body, use music, talk to someone who gets it, set emotional boundaries, prioritize rest and recharge, keep meaningful reminders, take mini-breaks and practice self-compassion.
