Working with children can be both rewarding and stressful, so it’s important to take care of yourself. Here are some effective stress‑relief techniques for early learning providers:Deep breathing or mindfulness: Take a few slow, deep breaths during a break to calm your mind. Short mindfulness exercises can help you refocus.Physical activity: Stretching, walking, or light exercise helps release tension and boost energy.Talk with colleagues: Sharing experiences and solutions with other staff can reduce stress and provide support.Take breaks when possible: Even a few minutes to step outside or have a quiet moment can make a difference.Journaling or reflection: Writing down your thoughts, frustrations, or successes can help process emotions.Hobbies and self-care outside work: Reading, art, music, or other activities you enjoy help you recharge.Laugh and have fun: Play and humor, even with children, can reduce stress and boost mood.Key idea: Taking care of yourself helps you stay patient, attentive, and energized for the children in your care.

I have found that I am less stressed about a work situation if I do not allow myself to dwell on it outside of work. I do allow a bit of focus towards it but I don’t allow it to effect how im feeling to the point where I’m stressed out.

I usually make sure that my breathing is clear and I am able to take a second to refocus myself when in a high stress environment.

Working with children can be stressful, so it’s important to take care of yourself. Deep breathing helps you relax, and taking short breaks to stretch or walk can recharge your energy. Exercise, writing your feelings in a journal, and practicing mindfulness or meditation can reduce tension. Talking with colleagues or friends about your experiences and setting aside personal time for hobbies or relaxation also helps. Taking care of yourself allows you to stay patient and connect better with children.

One technique that really helps me release stress is taking a few minutes to step away and breathe deeply before jumping into the next task. Sometimes just talking to a friend or coworker who understands the work makes a big difference. Even small things like stretching, drinking water, or taking a mindful moment help me stay grounded during emotional days.

I find that going outside for a short walk during my lunch break helps me immensely. Being outside feels very soothing to me and helps me reconnect with myself. Going for a gentle walk feels like a small luxury for me during my work day when I often feel pulled in many different directions. Listening to music, stretching, and reading an enjoyable book are also ways I de-stress on my breaks and during my evenings and weekends.

To reduce stress outside of work, going on walks outside, reading, crocheting, and talking on the phone with friends and family are all helpful strategies for me. During the work day, co-regulating with students can be helpful. For instance, using a stress ball alongside a student and trying breathing exercises together. Taking care of basic needs can also help reduce stress, for instance drinking water throughout the day and taking time for lunch each day.
